River City Ransomesque

on: December 31, 2008, 06:56:42 am
I stumbled across this on youtube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3BIaTYNafc

Seeing a 3D River City Ransom made me contact the creator to see if it's still around.
And apparently he hadn't worked on it in ages but would like to finish it.
I've always adored RCR, and I hope to re-make a favorite I'm doing my best to not copy the original pixel for pixel. I've done all the animations from eye balling the sprite sheets provided.

One of my favorite nes games along with Nintendo world cup, which has the same character sprites.
The animations seem like a very good start, but I don't really like the face. The nose doesn't sit there very well. The mouth doesn't need smoothing in the corners really.
Since it's a very simple style i suggest you don't try to holistically shade everything, but rather go with lots of flat surfaces and simple implied detail. As for the face, do like 10 different ones and see which ones turn out funny and edgy looking like the originals.

The gba remake of the game was butchered graphically with dead and boring color palettes, gradients and ineffective shading and details that were added just for the sake of adding stuff, not making it look better at all.
I'm sure you can pull off something way better and totally awesome though, so good luck with that  :y:

The coder sent me some old screenshots.
Apparently he had done a lot more then shown in the video I'm pretty excited to try it out.

I haven't played RCR for ages... but the idea of a 3d one is great

Firstly, I have to say your ramps are pretty boring, some purpley hue shifting in the skin tones would look great.

The animations are all pretty smooth and feasible. Only problems i have are, In the elbows he doesn't put much effort in, generally you put more swing into your torso, like in the double elbow's second swing, but for a double elbow your second would more likely be pointed upwards so your other arm isn't in your way, and you don't have to build up more momentum.

Most of the rest lack power, this would be due to them not following through, when you kick or punch you put your weight behind it (this applies more to heavy hits) which leads to your torso pointing in the direction of the hit.

The hit animation would be annoying in-game, spinning twice before hitting the ground would suck. And in the running/walking animations the complete lack of upper body movement bothers me, I know its an RCR thing but just a little would go a long way.

The spinning is like say it's a nice combo you're sent flying and your twirling in the air before you land on the ground.
You're not standing there your thrusted into the air.
I was also going to try the umf type hit back where their bent onto themselves, as well as a hit from behind.
Gonna start doing some grabs and involving them with attacks as well as hopefully a judo toss.

Hope this elbow manages to do what you were saying.

I'm trying to decide if I want to add motion trails to some attacks.
or
Though RCR never used motion trails.

Grabbing and jabbing repeatedly.

I like what you've got so far, I'd like to see a little more contrast on the skin or at least some slight hue shifting. Give him so hair and clothing. I think the animations are pretty good and very true to the classic game.
Keep it up and keep us posted.

That last one made ,y day
You seem to be having a problem with the hair, in which you don't seem to depict volume and overall shape.
Look into it, you would have a good understandin, if you use the old pencil and paper, I learn't the basics drawing anime(ok, but...), human like hair, where realism is what you need to work towards. After you do as such, you will find that the time in taken to do hair as a task will be minimal.
