I'm going to clobber you with my 'nade till it blows :D

on: December 29, 2008, 02:32:51 pm
I've recently bought/played/finished Half Life 2 and HL: Episode One, and I just love Zombines .
I've tried to make one from scratch but to use refs for details:

I've got problems with the colour palette, had to adjust the contrast several times. I don't know which style to go for, maybe I should make the coulours greyer, lighten them... Plus I did four different shading techniques on the head crab :/. Should I get rid of the grainy dithering completely and go for something else? Anyway please give c+c ^^

Refs:

(this was not used for the pose, just a coincidence :o)

Hey Chris2balls,

I do not like the wild dithering on the head! It doesn't really convey any information about the texture of the monsters head (which looks like it is supposed to be slimy or fleshy). Also, I do not quite like the light source on his head either, it get's darker towards every edge. From what it looks like, the left of his head (right to us) shouldn't be dark like that, it should maybe be a little lighter.

The lines and shape of things are good though, I especially like his back foot.

Keep working on it, I'm watching for updates.

I don't like the dithering on the head either. Do you have any other shading technique to suggest? Maybe make the colours closer and more fleshy? I'll make a few tests. Thanks!

I'm afraid that I'm not yet very good at conveying textures, but perhaps you could add a light pinkish tone and reddish tone to the top of his head, like in the first photo he has some red nasty stuff on top. I think with some fleshier colors will help too.

Found something interesting :D
I think I'll use a similar type of texturing as Snake used for the clouds. And I've added fleshier colours. Will update soon!
Thanks for the C+C!

Second Thoughts: Actually I don't think it'll work out that way. Trying something else.
Done:

Another:

I've decided that the handgrenade should be the only lightsource, so I'm readjusting it (haven't finished)

Is the hand grenade blowing up in his hand, or what? I don't see- unless it's some kind of grenade that emits light without having been blown up -how it could .. emit light.

Do you need an explanation for the nade having a light source?
Not really, this whole character is based on fiction, so why not the nade?

Actually Mr Dr D, can you re phrase that last bit of your sentence. As it makes no sense to me..that and the above comment could have no actuall point, if your not meaning what I think you mean.(Damn now I'm not making sense!! :-[ )

Well yeah I suppose it could, if you aren't trying to be realistic. What I mean is, (I'm pretty sure) grenades don't just make light. Unless they're blowing up.

But yeah, it could be a fictional grenade, such as, for example, a plasma grenade from Halo.

That's another of my refs and my Steam avatar. I don't think you've played HL2 Dr. D, but the grenades are red but when primed, go white, then explode. It's fiction.
Anyway I thought that it would be more interesting if the grenade should now be the light source . Will try and post something soon.
