Fable 2, Troll - W.I.P, Need Critique!

on: November 15, 2008, 09:53:48 am

Well I love the Fable Series, I have played and beat the first one, And am currently waiting for Christmas to get the second.
But I decided to try and pixel a troll, I think they're my favorite monster from the game, and I was wonder if I'm headed in the right direction. Any tips, crits, or anything else will help. (Clearly I'm putting my own twist on it.)

Face is looking a bit wide his eyes are too far apart, the roots are no where nearly enough rooty.
They look more like fat curved spikes then roots, I like the third root out of all of them.

The face.
It's too wide though.

Personally, I prefer to start out with basic shapes and colors instead of starting out with detailed line art. Even when I draw line art, I start out on paper so that it's easier to sketch out the forms of the creature before I start filling in details.

I'd start with the shape of the tree as a whole, then add the largest parts, like the hat, the arms and the face. Then gradually add more and more details. I think placing the different parts in relation to each other and getting proportions right is much easier this way, and I can see what I'll end up with fairly quickly. You can get advice on colors, composition and such pretty much right away. It also leaves some room for vagueness, as opposed to line art.

I don't know if you'd be more comfortable with working that way, but it's something to think about. ;D

Love how you did the face there Arachne:D However, though I begin to grasp the concept of the lines, they're still unclear to me, adding depth and detail should either wait for a later stadium, or be done in a less black and white way.

Wow, Thanks Arachne. While I work better with line art, I think you were right about adding the full shape of the body first. I also Shortened up the face. TrevoriuS, No offense but if you wanna be a bitch go do it somewhere else.

This is all I can do right now, cause I got stuff to do but I'll be back on later today, feel fre to critique while I'm gone, Thanks.

Update:

Starting upper body detail now.

allready the proportions are messed up, and you have put so much work into it. :\

obviously you are open to interpretation, but you really should consider Arachne's sugestion. cause it does get alot more done in alot less time. also, you may be gettin rid of lots of that linework in the end.
Image size doesn't matter! It's what you do with your pixels that counts!

Okay, so I think I'm gonna stick with the black outline thing instead of the paintbrush tool since I've already come this far. Besides, most of everything that's black now is going to stay black. I think the legs are going to give me trouble.

Update:

Starting on the color, Gotta finish up the lines though, cant get sidetracked.

Ah I see it is merely your workflow then. The shapes are much clearer defined right now, though the mouth may have been stretched a bit too wide accordging to the flatness of the face right now. I don't think the legs are very properly defined in the reference you use but it should work if you sorft of copy them.
