[WIP] Ice Block

on: November 07, 2008, 05:59:28 pm
Hey guys!

I'm at it again. I'm back to work on the platformer that I'm trying to finish for YoYoGames' Competition 04. I'm trying to craft a nice little iceblock that one of the characters can smash with his hammer. For some reason, this just doesn't fee right to me. It's based on a 15 bit palette, Ad I'd like to keep it that way. Could you guys give me some C&C on what I'm doing wrong, and what I'm doing right?

It's kind of odd because, among other things, the white 'shine' effect seems to suggest that the block is perfectly smooth, whereas the cracks suggest that it is not.

Remove the banding around the white(the 'outline').

@HMC:
The shine effect is really more of a gameplay mechanic, indicating that this block is interactable. The rest of the stage will be a static tileset, so i was hoping that it would stand out. Any idea of how I could keep the cracked look and still make it stand out from the rest of the stage? I don't want to do a different palette, because I don't want it to feel out of place in the stage.

If you broke the shine up so it appeared to run along the cracks? does that make sense? The AA on the cracks could use some work too.
thanks Dogmeat!

No, I mean you're outline details and it's causing a pillow-shading-esque effect. You need to shade the object as a whole, instead of basing your shading off of the details of the object.

The left is what you're doing, the right... well, is not exactly right as far as shading an icecube goes, but I'm sure you get the idea I'm trying to make.

I think the smooth shine on the cracks is perfectly alright, since the cracks seem to be inside the cube - and not on its surface.

How's this:

I made the cracks still show a bit in the shimmer, and I got rid of the pillow shading-esque outlining. Does this look more like it?

It's not really a shiny though, or at least doesn't look like that. It just looks like he's outlining them.

I think he was talking about the shine flash, not the shading on the cracks. I updated that, does it look better now?
