ok dex, I think you should stop working on pixelling this for the time being...

You need to work out what this hand will look like normally first. Sketch out some hands. http://www.posemaniacs.com/tools/handviewer/ might be useful. Focus on the volumes of the hand.

Also work on finding nice RGB dither patterns...use Helm's piece as inspiration, but also play around yourself.

Then combine what you have learnt from both sketching hands and experimenting with dithering patterns to form an awesome piece!
Don't sell yourself short by not fully planning out this piece. The choice to make this piece great is in your hands.

The main problem that I can make out, Dex, is the depth.

-Scale down the thumb + little finger a little bit
-Move up the ring, middle, and little fingers
-The thumb has an awkward connection, emphasize on the muscles connecting it more
-Change the little finger's postition
-Fix up some of the shapes in general

idk.

I don't see how anything I made should be a point of strong reference as to what else could be done in RGB. If he wants it noisy, I'm sure it can work somehow.

As long as the volumes are represented, the rendering is secondary. I think personally the thumb is great thus far, but I can't say if the whole hand is believable until it's all more worked.
I find what you did is a good example (not a reference) of using RGB: good use of dithering and colours; but as you say, there are many other ways of doing RGB (the thing is I couldn't find much RGB on PJ ><).  Right enough buttlicking. I have nothing to add about this piece, I agree with all previous comments. Good luck!
