finished: character template

on: October 26, 2008, 03:50:02 am
Hello,
Well, this is a character template I've finished for a 2d MMORPG in development.
I've redone it about 500 times and I've promised this is the final version, and I'm happiest
with this, and I won't be changing it.

But, I still thought I'd post it up on here to receive any feedback, and see what all you pros think of it ^^;

Template:

Template with clothes:

And before I get flamed, :P, I'd like to say I do know, and am not hiding the fact that those clothes
are completely based of Vaan and Yuna from final fantasy.

They won't be in the MMORPG, I just wanted something to play around and see how good
they looked clothed, and as I'm a fan of Final Fantasy design I used them.
But It's still pixeled from scratch :P.

Well, feel free to tell me what you think about them :O.

P.S. Yes they don't have hair yet :P

What's with the dark part on the top of the head? Looks out of place.
His arms look like they are attached to the chest rather than the shoulders.
The legs look very stiff, and a little too tall for the torso.
Make his torso a bit taller, make his legs and the head a bit shorter.

That's the style I was going for :P, a bit of anime'ish proportions ^^;

And yes, that dark spot at the top of the head does look a bit out of place, but it's there
because hair will be going over it ^^.

The arms are a bit close to the body, but it's a frame of a walk cycle, it might make more
sense if it was animated.
Hope that makes sense?

You just excused away all the feedback given to you.  Instead of taking it in and deciding that maybe something needs changing, you said "that's the style".  If "the style" makes people think your sprites look off, perhaps there is an issue with said style.

If you're posting art to get an idea of what people think, take it into account, don't dismiss it.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make you feel like that o.O;

I wasn't dismissing the feedback I received.
I took it all in, and am quite happy to change the few pixels on there head.
I took note, and replied to all the issues he had with my character.
There 'are' anime'ish proportions, and the issue he had with my arms isn't part of the style,
it's because of the animation pose/frame.

I was simply replying and explaining the character, not dismissing the remarks I received.

Hopefully you understand that?
Because I certainly don't want to fall into the category of 'non-listeners'.

I think the legs look wrong, even if it's the style, they seem to long and straight. It looks allright on the Vaan chara, but it still looks chunky and unfinished.
Also, the chest of the female template looks strange, but that's probably gonna be covered up in the game (or maybe not :))
Is this for an RMXP/VX game? I get that feeling from it, it looks similar to most templates on those communities.

It's, sort of an RMPXP/VX game, yet at the same time completely different, lol.

It's for a 2D MMORPG I'm currently developing.
The way the engine runs is similar in a way.
It uses the same type of character template,
so there's the 3 frames, for each angle, etc.
Which would give the feeling of similarity :).

And lol, she will be covered up o.O; xD.

And, I'm probably going to try recolour the legs a bit, the knees look a bit 'strong', standing
out a bit to much with some of the clothes.
Don't know if that's anything you were meaning?

Meanwhile before I get around to doing that,
here's a male I did :3.
