[WIP] My first pixel art: Clown Fish

on: October 23, 2008, 11:29:38 am
Hi!

Here's what I did:

To be honest, I am really impressed! I didn't thought I can make something that looks this good. Seems that all the tutorials on the net helped a lot.

But, what can I do to improve it? And how can I animate it? Do you know any good tutorials for animating pixel art?

The dark part (onder his eye) is to dark i think mabey a bit lighter, also the dark at the end (last fin) i dont like that.
The mouth can be a bit smaller i think also

mabey you should try use an oth background as white like use grey as background it helps.

i can't help you get it animated i like it (was it your first or?)

Thanks, aregon.

I have made the eye a bit lighter, I have removed the black line (forgot it in step 4, selective outlining).

I have also made the background grey.

Yes, it's my first pixel art (well, there were other tries in the past, but they were so bad that I forgot them and never showed them to anyone ;) )

Any other tips? How about animating?

The shadow thing under his eye is still too dark, I don't think you changed it, and I think that part would also be better without dither.
You should also delete the outlines between the body and the fins on top of and under the body.

I have deleted the outlines. But I still don't understand what you mean with the eye. Can you show me?

And how about these black outlines (near the white vertical lines of the fish)?

After hours of work, I've managed to finish an animation for a side fin. Here it is:

Also, you can see here all 5 frames (well, there are actually 9, but they are repeating: 1-2-3-4-5-4-3-2-1):

What do you guys think? How can I improve it?

the fin looks nice.. i think if you want to challenge yourself even more, you could try to add more motion to the fish's body and other fins.. make it wiggle like a fish, fins maybe flowing a bit .. maybe the mouth opening/closing..
pretty good so far i think.

I'm glad you like it. However it seems that's a lot of work to do for a "simple" animation. I think I'll take a break a few days...

Looking good so far.
The black outlines near the white parts are gray and not very visible.
Comparing it with the reference you can see that the white parts have thick outlines on the actual fish itself.

I like the animation but it isn't done.
it looks a bit fake now becouse onley 1 fin is moving you should try to let the last fin (at the end of the fish) move also
and mabey the mauth

realy great job on the animation
