[WIP] need help colouring the terrain

on: October 12, 2008, 05:42:06 pm
Hello people, i am new to the forum, i`m doing a beat them up with fantasy scenes, in this moment i am drawing the surface/terrain of the first stage.

Most recent:

I could fill the floor with leafs, but I think the picture would be highly charged.
maybe i can add more leaf flats or use 2 flats colors.

what do you think?

Old lineart:

the stage is a waterfall sourronded by cristals (the cristals make the ground levitate), and is floating ground so in the back maybe i add some clouds and the time is morning.

sorry for me english i speak spanish

Im not sure if there's a specific tutorial for that style, however I will say since you already have a "sketch"
of the terrain..why not try to rough our the details and shapes rather than retrace the line art first?
I find it an easy way to make things look more natural. It is a method used by the Disgaea team as well
as myself. If you need me to clarify just let me know.

I can show you a picture of what I mean if you like also. :)

well why dont you go ahead and start. we'll help you then. right now all I can say is : paint! thats the onlyway to get it looking as good as your reference
Image size doesn't matter! It's what you do with your pixels that counts!

As Kaz said, painting is usually the way to go..I probably should have described it that way, my apologies. Anyway here is a quick
example...I didn't get into too many details or fine tuning, I just wanted to show you the very basics of how I usually start terrain.
After this point it is a lot of fine tuning. I think the main concept is to get the ideas, shapes, and shading down and then fine tune
the lines and details for that sharp look. Not everyone, but a lot of us that focus too much on the lines first end up having
our terrain look very unnatural.

Please pardon my disregard for all that is holy and sacred in art, had to do this in a rush.

the colour you use at the mountain maybe i use it at the bottom, because is where crystal levitate the terrain.

My example was very quick and probably won't do well to serve as the basis for your terrain, I just wanted to show you
a different approach to terrain :)

What you're doing, the methodology you're using will not help you progress as fast as you could as an artist. Instead of mimicking something you think is a 'style' in a capcom game, you could look into art fundamentals and demystify what they're doing, so you don't have to mimick them, just understand and use what you want from any source.

I think I understand what you say, what I want to know now is how to do this surface coloring or whether it is better to draw where it would be all colors or draw the outline on the computer and then start drawing the colors.
