Noob's biggest problem shading

I've been working on my shading abilitys for about 1 year and its the thing that really stops me from pixeling.
 :blind: I think this is the best i did so far more of a 10 min job,but I would like to know if you guys think i am getting the concept of shading?

It would be easier to help you if I knew what that was.

Pick something that's actually.. something. Part of shading is giving something texture.

I think it's a gargoyle thing. However it is very pillowshaded, and has a pretty bad palette imo. It also seems like you have shaded every part separately, you should shade it all as one.

With that crab, i think you've shaded with in mind that the futher from the light source, the darker is gets in a linear (or quite close) line..

This makes it feel, that it's flat.. Also the pallete is horrible, there isn't enough Contrast (search if need be), and the lightest colour is huge in Saturation (again search if needed).

Try, and think how the light would affect by shape, by looking at it more as a shape than art. this will help you decide how light would act on the shape

Now it's impossible to see what it is. It's just not readable. I suggest you look at some tutorials, and alsotry working on more simple shapes like the crab you posted til you get a better hang of it.

honestly? if you've been at it for so long....pick up photography...try to play with light and make some photos...it's gotta improve your shading
