[c64WIP] Your Room Is This Way, Sir.

on: September 07, 2008, 07:13:55 pm

something I've never tried before, and BaB told me I should

I'm having trouble getting some areas to look right, like the bow and the upper right corner, but for the most part I think I'm doing a fairly good job. C+C is appreciated!

It would help if you used the full resolution of 320x200 (160x200 widepixels). And it does not look like you are adhering to the restrictions (1 global background colour + 3 extra colours per 8x8 pixel (4x8 widepixel) character (tile).

You also have some singlepixels in there.

Apart from that this looks workable.
You have a nice character going, tho atm it is a bit pale with the grey background, I would suggest distributing the contrast a bit.
Keep at it.
There are no ugly colours, only ugly combinations of colours.

Thanks. The grey background is just a place holder right now, I'm planning something a bit more interesting.

As for some of the restrictions, I was browsing a few other pieces at PJ and they didn't seem to always have the 1 global background colour + 3 extra colours per 8x8 pixel (4x8 widepixel) character (tile) rule going on, but I'll see what I can do.

What do you mean when you say the "full resolution?"

Your picture is 161x72, C64 has 320x200...
A man touched down on the moon, a wall came down in Berlin, a world was connected by our own science and imagination. Yes we can!

Oh, right. Here's the correct size canvas with some more things worked on. I'd also love suggestions on what to add to this, if you could! :D

He's looking very flat, did you draw him square and stretch him out doublesize? Widepixel stuff needs different techniques to get the right shapes:

That's just me restretching it, I didn't draw on it or anything, so the dithering's broken, and it'd look better with manipulation. See what I mean, though?

Well I guess that depends which mode they were done in. C64 has 2 main graphics modes, singlecolor (also called hires) and multicolor.

Both these modes are possible in bitmap and character mode, for images like we do here bitmap mode is what you want.

In the case of multicolor you get 1 background colour for the whole thing and 3 per 8x8 (4x8 widepixels) char.
In hires you get 2 colours per char and the full 8x8 resolution. Basically less colours, more pixels.

Then there are tons of hack modes which people invented through using coding tricks, like flickering between 2 offset mcol images and so on. There are some pictures from Jailbird on PJ I think which are interlaced but he has them on PJ in full 320x200 singlepixel glory. The things is that they do not look like that at all on the real thing, they are just pixelled that way and then when they are compiled they get seperated into 2 seperate mcol images which are then flickered on top of each other, one of them being 1 pixel offset.

So in regards to all of that, I would suggest you to use standard Multicolor Bitmap, 1 background colour + 3 per char. This is a very nice mode to hone your general pixel skills.
There are no ugly colours, only ugly combinations of colours.

Update. Not a lot, but something.

Tocky, he's actually supposed to be kind of wide. The original was WAY more stretched than that, though! Haha.

Ptoing, are you saying I should reduce the colors?

Nice wide pixelart! What shape is the desk though? It doesn't look really, well square like most. It looks like it's curved with the shading you're using. Circular desk would look cool, though  :D

I am saying you should reduce the colours in such a way as to adhere to the mcol restriction. Also get rud of the single pixels you have going on in places. Make everything widepixels.

I am also not really feeling the bigger blocky dither you got going on atm.
