Doom, inspired by Mockup Frenzy #3: Game Boy De-Makes!

on: September 07, 2008, 09:15:56 am
I got really excited when I saw that thread http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=5016.0

I went away and de-made Doom...

But then I saw that the thread closed over a year ago *sigh*

This is what I ended up with anyway

And I made a page for them here:
http://nrkn.com/doom/gameboy/

Only problem is, now I want to play it, and it doesn't exist  :P

The front/side view sprites don't fit the 3/4 view playfield very well. Otherwise, it looks very impressive.

I'm pretty sure you just resized the existing sprites and textures and then color-reduced them.  :(

I pretty much *did*  do just that.  Resize, colour reduce.  Except it looked terrible, so I had to touch up or recolour everything by hand, apart from the exit door and the status bar face which I left as was.  It was certainly more an exercise in composition than in pixel art, but I did try to follow the Game Boy rules.

But this forum/compo is not about just demaking things at any cost, it's about maintaining a level of purity in the pixel art you do. Not for some abstract reason, but because I guarantee you that if you redraw these elements by hand they will look better than any resized-cleaned versions you do. They never were meant to be so small, so new designs that ARE made to be small should have to be introduced. Do read the rules of the forum also.

Like so:

Editing shouldn't be this fun.
(dunno GB limitiations though, probably too many sprites/line).

edit: crap, i broke a lot of restrictions. Color ones for sprites mostly.
