My Little Guy

on: August 12, 2008, 04:23:23 pm
This is my second piece of pixel art and my first sprite.

Its a sword-wielding scuba diver-like guy with an Italian flag

Don't ask where I thought of this.

CnC welcome. but keep in mind I am extreme newb  ;D

Some crits, then.

The helmet and the rest of the body indicate a different light source. On the helmet and the knife the light is coming from somewhere up on his left side, on the rest of the body it's coming from up and slightly to the left, but still almost in front of him.

The arm is too short to ever him being able to reach the handle of the knife.

What are the +'s on the green area? It doesn't read very well.

Keep on pixeling. :)

Is that his back or his front??? I think the pose is somewhat off-centered or something. Like, his head is to the right, but the rest of the body is straight, which makes it confusing to read the pose right. Unless I'm blind. :P

This needs some work.  But as you said, this is your second piece.

Yeah, your right, Sokota.  His head rests a little to far to the left.

The arms look really funny.  They are way too short.

Sorry for not replying quicker, I've been busy.

Mostly the problems are with the perspective, from what you guys have said. I adjusted the angle he's facing, made his arms longer (I don't know how I thought the old ones were acceptabke  :-X), and I made the flag appear to be waving. I think he's much improved, and he's good for a newb imo. Thanks for all of the crits btw, you guys rock :D

Ps: I'm getting a weird blur on the image, but only in the forum, not on Photobucket. Is anyone else getting this?

Yeah it's better already. Your guy has some good basic shapes to train shading on, so here's a suggestion. Try and pick a single lightsource for starters and apply it on the guy. Think about the primitives your guy has. I put some examples here. See how you can play around with the outline based on the lightsource.
