(WIP)Yo Yo what is up, Run Cylce

on: August 11, 2008, 12:01:26 pm
Yo what is up home spices?  I was wondering if I could get some comment and critique on this little animation of mine.  I really want to have head rotation but sadly I am not skilled enough to pull that off.  I eagerly await whatever is in store for me.

eh.. he has the dreaded same arm same leg syndrome. check how you have the same arm and leg on one side in sync.. they should counterbalance each other by having the arm come forward as the leg goes backward... hope this makes sense.

Also, his hairline moves too much.  I'm not talking about the strand of hair but rather his whole scalp seems to bounce like 2 pixels.  And I think It looks great with no head spin.  I almost always think that looks contrived.

don't worry about head rotation. you can do it as an experiement, maybe, but most of the time, the rotation ends up looking awful, and most peoples heads don't rotate when they run or walk anyway. thnk about it. when you're running towads somethig you're looking *staight* at it. unless you're constatly scanning your envronment...whic is just silly.

What a great character. I love the style.

Here is a little help with the animation.

Frames 2+3 and 7+8 are too similar and a waste of frames making the animation look like it has less frames than you actually got.
Also If you were to use this animation in a game the feet would slide since it's not moving on the ground between these frames.

In frames 3->4 and 8->9 the two hands almost switch places making it hard to follow the swinging of the arm.

Try to make the hands move along a curved line.

The horizontal stripes on the pants is making it harder to read the legs because there are so many red parts that move around.
It looks cool designwise but alot of times simple designs make for smoother animation.

Having that said I think you've done a good job with the shoulder action and twisting of the upper body.
Also the stretching of the body makes for a fast run.

Alright cool thanks everyone I'm going to address these problems in my next update.  Though I don't want to change the stripes I will see if I can make them less intrusive.  Also I'm glad to hear that head rotation is a bit...weird because I thought so too.  Glad it isn't really expected.
