It's quite obvious I need some help here

on: May 13, 2008, 01:30:54 am
Hello. First pixel attempt here, I know I really should try finishing something before posting it, but I've decided I lack artistic vision right now, and just need some help.  :yell: Sooo, I know big problems with this are:
1. The subject sucks. I know  :-[
2. Bad rendition of subject. [lines]
3. Bad palette.
4. Bad coloring with that bad palette.

Now that I know what's wrong with it [is there more?], I need some help with it. Well, right now just regarding the last 3. Thank you  :D

Here, i tried to use that palette, result's kinda creepy but see if it get you some ideas depending on what you want from this. I'm not exectly a color specialist, but as you pick you colors make sure you have some desaturated one's by your hand, espesially for shadows and stuff, i had to make some out of greens.=)

I think also general lighting and drawing tutorials will help a lot.=)

actually, i did an edit, too. although fool's is definitely cooler than mine, mine has a different focus, i guess.
one of the three things you wanted help with was rendition of the subject. and i guess i took that as the pose and style of it. so i went ahead and messed around...

i added two skin shades. it's super rough, and hurried.

Thank you very much for that edit Fool, appreciate it. You actually have made my favorite pixel art piece ever  :P , that Adam and Eve picture is what I show my friends when they ask what pixel art is.  Yeah, I'ma trying to do as many tut's as I can T_T Are there any specific tut's you recommend?  :-\

Thank you very much, infinity+1, this'll be helpful when I try to practice some smaller, more realistic headsized, sprites. I also stole your skin tones XP. Now you may say, "NO MAJORIS! This was a rush job, there are many more, more finished pieces you can look at!" but it actually works better in my brain to see what I've created, and then the way someone else has created it...if that makes sense, so thank you.  :D

Okay, now, I tried not to "copy" to many things  :yell: ....the things that are blatantly copied [because once I saw it done your way, my brain blocked out any other way] was the eyes [which, even though copied, don't look as good as yours because of my crappy shading around it], the feet shape, aaaaand the technique of coloring the wings. Probably a few more things I forgot about too... So yes, the face and hair are WIP (well teh whole thing is, just I haven't put the effort into the hair/face yet, mostly because I really don't know how to...yet)

Any more C+C please? I know this is still crap, and it will be crap, I just want to finish it, so i can say i finished my first real attempt at Pixeling!!! Damn, this would actually be the first piece of art I've ever finished. It's sad, I know.

Btw, where the hell did these 270 page views come from? It freaks me out that there are that many people just reading what we say, and we don't know they're there  :-X

Okay, i think all that colors in your palette  confuse you a lot...At this point i'd get rid of most colors and leave like 3-4 midtones - not to bright, not too dark - for main parts of the picture. Then figure out the light source - direction and desired brightness and according to that pick highlights - 1-2 is usually enough for sprite that small and a few shades for shadows. Both and highlights and shadows tones might be picked so they could be shared between your main colors and keep in mind that those are part of a light source properties, not just a darker or lighter colors - highlights requred more  saturation and brightness, shadows - in opposite.. Unfortunately, I don't really know color theory well and i don't have links for tut handy, but you sure could find some useful stuff in here.

I think coping is ok while you pick a technique from  pieces you like one way or another as long as you learn something.

Why are you using a white background?  :mean: :yell:

Great edits, and you've made alotta progress there Majoris. One thing is if you use green light on the chin (reflected from the shirt) I think its important to have that green brighter than the brown you use for the face outline.
Modern artists are told that they must create something totally original-or risk being called "derivative".They've been indoctrinated with the concept that bad=good. The effect is always the same: Meaningless primitivism

Thanks again Fool, I'll try to lower the color count and do all that...

Sharprm, Ima usin a white backround 'cause...that's what was there when I opened graphics gale.  :-\
Thank you, I'm trying  :) and I'll take that advice. And use it.

I'll be back with an update eventually, haven't had much time lately...actually I haven't touched a pixel (lol) since i posted that edit.
