~ Random Pixels ~

on: April 30, 2008, 05:49:47 pm
Small robot with sword

At first this piece was webcam icon, but it somehow turned into robot.

Steam crab

I don't know how to pixel or draw steam(yes, it's supposed to be steam what comes from it's hole).  :n:

Mockup

It's still WIP ~

I like these a lot!  the steam crab would benefit I think from not being mirrored, having a more interesting perspective and lighting.  THe steam looks quite nice, but that is definitely one of those things that takes a lot of its identity from animation.

Meh, I'm really sorry not to been able to reply earlier, I've been a bit busy lately, got new job and also had some issues in my life or problems, dunno which term I should use in this situation.  :-\

Anyways thanks for your comments AdamAtomic and Vertigo-zero. <3

Yeah it's kinda boring as it' snow, but I'm not gonna bother with it anymore, don't have much motivation to redraw it.

make the game or let me :P Or at least a mock-up
I've never actually managed to finish any of my game projects, so I don't think I'm gonna even try to make game out of this, also if you're interested you may use the sprite in your games without any credit or such.

Here's something new:

It's an early mockup ~  :blind:

These are excellent. Try pincers on the crab? He looks a little uninteresting for his size.

Quite a good start what you have there.
The background on the mockup tiles too obvious and some of the edges of stuff are unclear.
Same goes for the bright side of the battery head thing. Due to the dark outline and no real outline on one side it looks thicker on the bright side.
There are no ugly colours, only ugly combinations of colours.

i love your backgrounds and color selection. (well, and the little one-eyed ninja robot, of course).

one thing i'm not convinced with the battery thing is the +/- he's got sticked on his face. Given sizes, etc. having it black & white breaks the overall identification rather than it helps. I tried "bluring" them in softer colors, but then i have to add plenty of colors to your restricted palettes, so you might prefer just drop that detail and give hint that it's a battery with other details (e.g. electricity sparks ?)

A last thing you should reconsider (imho) is the y-flipped structure for the top of your mockup. I'd say keeping it the same will make the whole scene more consistent (e.g. light do come from up-left corner for the whole scene).

keep us updated ;)

Thanks for the comments, so many small things I didn't notice before I read your posts, and yeah I'm still working with the backround it's kinda messy I have to admit ~ Also replaced the batterything with a new guy:

I think it matches better with the tiles, but now I got this odd feelin' that someone has made similar character or maybe it's just me....

Also what do you people think is it hard to read or does it look just fine?

I really like the style, but it looks pretty washed out now. The shading on the pipes also makes them look a bit flat.

Something more like this, maybe?

Um, yeah Arachne said everything I was going to say, but then she made a great edit too.  So...I guess that's it.  Character is adorable!

Hey that looks really awesome! I like how you gave the tiles more depth.  :y:
This gave me some ideas ~ let's see if I can do some
improvement.  ::)

As for the similar character bit, the head of your character bears distinct resemblance to the monkeys from a game I used to play long ago, Illutia. I'm too lazy to track down a better shot of said monkey, but here's evidence that I'm not entirely insane:

Cute as hell character, though :D

yeah, the big ears make him look a bit monkey-like (which add cuteness, imho), but he's clearly wearing a helmet here, and imho, has some foreign affiliation with both Bomberman and Megaman, which perfectly fit the "shoot and run" look of the game. Good job at how you make him look so determined compared e.g. to Quote in Cave Story (which is a bit too unexpressive to my tastes). I'm looking forward to see him jump, run and hook on the ceiling to swing above dangerous areas :)

Initially, i thought the ninja-webcam thing was the character and that the battery-thing was an opponent. I guess you could keep both of them as opponents without any problem.
Also, i cannot exactly decide whether the green things that grow out of the ground are crystals or vegetal lifeform (well, it could be a crystal-vegetal lifeform too

Made it too noisy? Pipes are still wip ~

Next time more stuff rather than tile edits.  :n:

Now that you say so, it does slightly remind of monkey.  ;D

I must admit that I've got some megaman influence in my work ~ oh and those things are supposed to be grass or small plants etc.  :blind:

Feron: Thanks ~

I think the rocks should have more color relation with the pipes

or perhaps you should make some more rock tiles that would be placed near the pipes to create more variation.

I find it not necessary to start a new topic for this picture, so I posted it here. I've started to make some graphics for my new game that I've been working on for couple of days, but now I've got these problems with depth issues. problem 1# hairs: should I do something to 'em or just keep 'em simple colour as they're now? prob. 2# How to make stone tiles look less flat ~ prob. 3# How to give that monster character's shell more depth without making itmore complex, so it would fit the game's current simple graphic style? If anyone could help I'd appreciate it. :)

Oh and the 2x picture 'cos firefox makes pics blurry when zooming 'em...

edit: Forgot to mention that the monster is [WIP], it's gonna be twice as big as it's now ~

edit2: added 1x pic

edit3: edited stones a little bit ~

edit4: updated 2x picture

I think the flat shading style is wonderful; if you want to add more volume to the hair you could add a few lines to define the direction and shape a little more.

those edits are great and gave me some ideas  :y: , I think I'll put different styles to choose from (with lines and/or without).  :)

Also grab update. ~

Some more progress.

I'vent got the hair lines look as I'm aiming to, so characters still have their original hairs.
