Hiragana Katakana fonts...

on: April 23, 2008, 03:20:06 pm
Hi all...

Just wondering if anyone had ever tried knocking up katakana/hiragana fonts in 8x8's?

knocking up?

i'm sure some were pixelled for the gameboy etc, though i've never tried myself (don't have the same fascination with asia as many people...not that fascination is a bad thing, I'm taking Arabic next semester)
A mistake is a mistake.
The same mistake twice is a bad habit.
The same mistake three or more times is a motif.

I don't know much about japanese language, but I think if you need references, an old (NES, GB, GBA) japanese Zelda title (or the like, with much text) should provide enough inspiration. With a sprite / tile ripper you should be able to extract every needed character as reference.

Here's a link with some screenshots containing japanese text (Arne's Webpage)

Hi Baccaman21  ;D

Did this for fun, good luck with your search.

Modern artists are told that they must create something totally original-or risk being called "derivative".They've been indoctrinated with the concept that bad=good. The effect is always the same: Meaningless primitivism

This one is quite nice, though it does not have uniform-width characters: http://www2.wind.ne.jp/maniackers/Hachipochi.html

I made a monowidth katakana one.  I'll do the hiragana if anyone's interested, though that'll be a lot harder to squeeze into 8x8.

Edit: numbers and punctuation

What did you reference? 'cause I can see several characters missing and non-existant characters in your sheet....

Memory.  What did I forget/add? atrkhmnswy, vd gbpnz, then the half-sized ones...  i think that's all of them? ???
Edit: yeah, vis: http://www.saiga-jp.com/img/character/japanese_language/hiragana_katakana_list.gif
The ones I have that they don't are: va-vi-vu-ve-vo (a-i-u-e-o with the two dots) and half-size a-i-u-e-o; both of these are for constructing sounds not native to Japanese (such as "di," which is written de-small i).

Edit v: ahh, ok, fixing

WA is missing.
Also there is no A, I, E O with ", only U.

And ideally you should put them in order, you know:
A I U E O
KA KI KU KE KO
SA SHI SU SE SO
TA CHI TSU TE TO
NA NI NU NE NO
HA HI FU HE HO
MA MI MU ME MO
YA - YU - YO
RA RI RU RE RO
WA WO N
