[WIP]Weird tree

on: April 23, 2008, 04:34:44 am

Well my current main thought is too saturated but I need help with the other aspects. ???  Trunk is currently just a placeholder.

Hmm...

It looks more like a bush than your typical tree; the trunk is way too wide and not long enough to look quite right. The canopy looks as though it was just a small part of the tree, and you'd be adding more to it. This is because most trees will not have just one branch filled with leaves like your tree seems to have, they have a lot of branches with smaller tufts of leaves at their extremities, this is why most artists start with a whole bunch of circles as a kind of guide for where to put the leaves.
Another, more realistic, way you might go about drawing a tree would be to sketch the entire tree without the leaves, then draw the tufts where they're needed.

I'm not saying you should start over, just maybe break your leaves into some more segments, and make the trunk slimmer and taller.
