avatar portrait

on: March 23, 2008, 10:03:46 pm
Anyone here know where I can find some tutorials for making portraits...

I want to tackle as much as I can myself before posting my pic and getting some help and critiques.

The list of things I'm stuggling with "basically everything noobs struggle with" :
1) Flesh Shading
2) Hair Shading
3) Anti-aliased Curves

It's important to search for these things prior to just making a new thread, there are actually a few places of use here that tries to answer commonly asked questions.

Here on pixelation Helm's started a thread with links to some things that people have searched for, but honestly just use that search button. Or browse the forum.

Google is pretty useful too.
I've not got anything interesting to type here..

I'm aware of the rules... to be honest I did search online for awhile and in this forum but was comming up empty handed... after that I just got lazy and figured there wouldnt be much harm in just posting...

actually I got some hints from looking at other peoples avatars including yours.
thx for the link ;)

Okay I wasn't going to post it, cause I made some critical errors before I was finished with it...

-The biggest mistake I made was the fact I started with a 128x128 tile instead of 64x64.
-The rest of it is just a mess; the Shirt seems artificial and awkward and the face is flat and needs shading.
-The hair could of turned out if I had kept going maybe.
-The poportions didnt seem to far off when I started, but somthing seems off and I cant figure it out.
-The lips, eyes, ears, and nose is all wrong.

Guess I need more practice in general art before I attempt this again. :(

Well, I definately know its an improvement.

All critiques welcome at this point.
My biggest concern is the dithering on my face, I dont like it but it doesnt look right without it...
Downsizing to 64x64 obviously helped.

Give yourself some shoulders! Realistically, the shoulders should almost fill the frame and only have a very gradual slope. They're often drawn narrower as a stylistic choice, but if you're gonna go that direction, the neck will also need to be (unrealistically) skinnier to match or it'll look awkward. The dithering might add some depth, but it shouldn't be the same thickness/density all the way down the face. Parts of that side of the face that protrude more—like the cheekbone—should catch more light, while parts that are recessed—like the temple—should catch less.

Nice progress, anyway! Keep it up! :D

Okay took advice on the shoulders and it made a huge difference...

still a little iffy on the shading but hey I'm getting bored of playing with it, so I figured I'de make a finished product for now...

I think that *might* count as annoying flashing.

I guess it may come close to violating ruile number 8 on this message board, but keep in mind I'm not exactly posting it as my avatar just yet.

Also let us not forget about some of our more respected members that are currently displaying animations that also come close to breaking the rules.  ex) crab2selout's avatar has a more "sudden" flashing than mine altho granted it is not constant. Conceit's Avatar is very similar to mine in the fact that is fades in and out. Keep in mind both artists have superior skill to mine which I dare not compare.

What I was trying to achieve actually was the fading effect seen on a classic dos game: I believe it was epic pinballs "enigma" table top. I might add this was their 3rd most popular pinball game. the whole screen was displaying this effect. Even hits like FF3 when a character obtained certain ailments, the people glowed for awhile.

However I actually thought the same thing, and now that you brought it up, I wounder if has bothered anyone else.
I did intend to keep it this way but if its to much I'll just have to change it.

Thanks for the critique. :)
