[newbie] Baby

on: February 14, 2008, 06:16:49 pm
Today I've taken some passport pictures of a baby whom inspired me to draw this:

His eyes were so wide open that I think they were about to jump out from his eye sockets

As usual, be rough with C+C!  :)

edit ( asymmetric shadows):

Ick! Horrible color combination. Go for something a little more neutral, maybe a duller yellow-green.

I think the colors are fine...I love how much you simplify and symbolize...you're on to something very neat.

Right now, the lighting, or lack thereof, is killing the piece.

Here's a lame attempt to show what I mean:

Really all I did what change how it was lit.

With more dynamic and less symmetrical lighting, you can bring out the shapes and intricacies of the face.
Man cannot remake himself without suffering for he is both the marble and the sculptor.

Thank you both for your help!

@lilwing: About the color combination, I have chosen the green palette in order to strenghten the symbolic meaning of the piece.  :)

@rydin: Thanks  :D Major issue: the lighting, as usual! Actually I am quite interested in it (as wannabe photographer, you know) and found your attempt so much useful!
Here I am working on the symmetrical istance:

Have a wonderful day  ;D

Study the cheek bone shading (the shade below the eyes) that you see in rydin's attempt.  :y:

mattpk, here:

I've edited the cheek bone shading and the chin shading.  :y:

Now, about editing the first post with up-to-date images:

Is it better adding to the post every substantial change in my piece?
Or just reply to the last answer?
Who knows  ???

It looks better, but for omse reason there is a line over the mouth that looks to me like a moustache.  ???

It seems I have got a problemi with the mouth

Actually this is the element's order, from  bottom to top:

chin shadow (shadow green)
chin (black)
lower lip (shadow green)
lips (black)
upper lip (shadow green)

So, the mouth is not well readable  :yell:

quick fix (black pixel added-center of the mouth line):

I wouldn't say the combination is necessarily bad, but rather that bright green. I still stand by my earlier opinion, since that color is very unnatural.

@lilwing
is unnatural = bad? My intent was to draw an odd baby staring eyes wide open at you. Do you think that a pink, cute w.a.s.p. baby
(or greenish-yellow, as you say) works better at that than a freaky, green-coloured one camed from my warped mind?  ;D

Here lies an update (worked on chin shading, as you can see):

I said that unnatural is not bad. Didn't you read what I said?

I THINK this piece could be improved by changing the colors. Color is relative, and when there is nothing to compare the contrast of that rich, vibrant green, to neutralize it, in other words, it is somewhat annoying.

I did a simple color edit to show you what I mean. It's okay to be unnatural, but you must know what you're doing first, so that it looks right! I hope that you understand what I mean now. By all means, continue using the same colors if you wish, I am just trying to help you understand a little bit about color... or what I know of it anyway.

edit: the green i chose is a bit yellow, making the yellow highlights kind of nonexistent. to fix that problem, just pick a green a little less yellowy.

Now, this is something I can learn, so I tank you  :)

Again, thank you. I've seen the edit, an I prefer my version. But that's about me, not you.

Darken the saturated green a bit, though. It hurts my eyes and it's way too saturated.

While you continue to work at this wonderful piece, try to step away from the football-shaped eyeballs. It will definitely add to the piece! Also, Opacus's edit looks kind of flat.

The angle of the eyebrows are making him look pissed.  I mean, creepy is one thing, but pissed is another--I think neutral, less-angled eyebrows would make him seem less like he's got a grudge, and more like he's going to do something creepy.  Does that make sense?

Guys, thank you for keeping up with C+C  :D

@Opacus: You edit is great, it brings out the depth and the details of the piece. But I was trying to realize a 4-colours piece  :-\

Try to step away from the football-shaped eyeballs.

I will, sir.

@Rydin: Right. Moved that on the TODO list  ;)

I will post an edit as soon as possible!
