Please help with determining canvas size

on: October 23, 2020, 11:42:29 am
Hey,

I am new to pixel art and currently trying Aseprite for the first time. Online I see all these crazy large art works, but what size does a canvas need te be?

For example this beautiful piece by Dmitry Petyakin:
https://www.artstation.com/artwork/QzW0oZ

When I load it in Aseprite it says: 1280 x 960
But when I zoom in, 1 pixel on the artwork is actually 4 pixels large. DO I just divide it by 4 then? So it leaves me with roughly 320 x 260? That seems awfully small for a piece like this.

Thanks

1 pixel in that image is 2x2 pixels in reality (it's been resized by 200%), so you should divide by 2.
Then you could double or triple its size to display it online. Except here on Pixelation or other pixel art forums.

But your canvas can be as large or as small as you want...

my best advice is to pixel the littlest detail or item you want represented as clear as you can and scale everything up from there.
for instance i am drawing some Digimon fanart so i started with the Digivice which is small and will be in finally piece. by starting with that i can scale the characters and landscape to a size most useful to me.
