Paul Robertson's new film, Kings of Power 4 Billion %, is out...

http://probertson.livejournal.com/

... and it's magnifique!

I see this as the ultimate version of japanese animation/videogame aesthetic fixations, from the all-stereotype cast of heroes to absurd levelling ups of power to the endless combo attacks down to the nonsensical 'spiritual' 'trapped in a dream endlessly fufufufu' ending. As such it's interesting and somewhat funny. I don't know however if the endless hours of work that Paul has put into this were worth making such a statement about popular entertainment. If I'm completely off the mark and there's some other meaning involved in this, then alright

I enjoy Pauls stuff, tho I have to agree here, esp considering that his other longer movies are essentially the same more or less.

I watched the short, and, eh. I dunno. I just didn't dig it like I did Pirate Baby. It definitely did feel like more of the same, except really jumbled and to an excess that I just couldn't imagine another of its type being made without me groaning.

The animation and whatnot was nice, though.

EDIT: Also: where/who do I go to to get my username changed? If those who can will it are reading, I'd like it changed to 'shaheen.' Thanks.

I thought it was definitely the most ambitious/epic in terms of animation. But Devil Eyes was really poignant and actually had some emotional bite. And Cabana Baby was fun because he tapped into a lot of nostalgia. Kings of Power seems like it's just purely self-indulgence. As an artist he has every right to make a project for himself, but it makes it feel more like you're looking at someone's sketchbook than watching a film.

"Kings" is about visual excess. The video game nature of it provides an easy context for the viewer to relate to, and the Japanese flair excellently communicates visual anarchy. While Robertson could have turned this or any one of his pieces into a game, the lack of interactivity forces you to notice the flashy trim more. It's all about impact. I find the "deeper" material in it satirical (like the universe character killing the protagonists by hurting herself). It reminds me of cheesy anime or game storylines that try to be profound. Consequently, his work remains intentionally superficial.

True, but Super Parsnip Bitches, Baby Cabana and Kings of Power are all essentially more or less the same (tho I am very happy that there is no more speech, the voiceover in SPB is, although satirical, gringeworthy).

Personally I like his musicvideo stuff more, esp Devil Eyes.
