There are books on pixel art? Either way, it'd probably be better to just go for it and try pixel art.

This is the only one I know of that doesn't seem fake or useless is:

http://www.amazon.com/Character-Design-Mobile-Devices-Lawrence/dp/0240808088

It features Pixelation-known artists like Henk and Gary (Gunstar Red). It's not incredibly deep but it's a nice coffee table-style book on pixel art. I'd love to see some of the folks like Helm and Ptoing write a thorough examination of the art in book form some time.

Perhaps when I'm old and wise.

What I'd rather do for now is if we ever have a Pixelation meet, is a powerpoint (for the power!) interactive pixel art tutorial from bottom to top along with questions and answers. Three day seminar, hah!

You're right. This is the only acceptable book out there, but it's really low level information wise (and design wise). Maybe for beginners in pixelart it could be nice. But for intermediate pixelartists there's no new stuff (except for the interviews and some graphics (henks' mobile game for example)). The outfit is really bad... some images are wrongly blown up with strange pixel ratio and many pixel screenshots are jpged.
I don't know how much it is today, but when you posted it for about 4Euros or so, it was worth it. But for a full price, I wouldn't recommend it.

Btw: The interview with Henk is available here (from author's page)

Well, to be honest. Pixelation itself is a pixelbook. I spent many hours reading through old posts of this forum and I won't stop, because there are so many useful information to fill two books or more. I think you should save your money and read through the forum, it's cheaper and you get more specific information (not bundled, but well..)

Ah... I remember years ago I found a book which they stopped printing, but the owner of a program called "gamemaker" got the rights to distribute it. (Gamemaker kind of sucked... unless you coded everything, thing it was just a tool to compile you games written in GML, which is a bit like javascript.) Anyways, this might be helpful, I remember printing the whole thing out, although I can't remember if I ever found any of it useful.

http://www.gamemaker.nl/feldman.html (took me a while to find because game maker is now weirder and sends you to another website)

If our art is digital, why can't our books be?   ???

http://www.geocities.com/skulkraken2002/

The "book" that pretty much anybody worth mentioning learned from.  It's a little outdated now, but there's megs of worthwhile content.  Either way, it is a good primer on the ethics of pixelling.

Find other good "books" at your local library, under the "tutorials and resources" section:

btw: when's this three day seminar? seriously.

Man cannot remake himself without suffering for he is both the marble and the sculptor.

Why don't the members of Pixelation band together and make a book?  ;D That'd be awesome!
