Quick portrait revamp

on: December 20, 2007, 05:09:31 pm
This hardly justifies a new thread, but oh well.  I decided to redo my ol' portrait which had much more potential than what I granted it at the time.  I don't think much will change, as I'm focussing on other projects right now, but if anything is blazingly wrong feel free to let it known...

(new <--->  old)

I did a color count on the original and apparently it had 20 colors!  sheesh.  Its 14 now.

Can you post the old one for comparison? Also it looks kinda funny how the hair looks like it's extruded out of the head :D
There are no ugly colours, only ugly combinations of colours.

*done*

and the 'extruded' hair obviously was done intentionally :P  Just kind of a fun stylistic choice

Looks deffo much nicer than the old version. Tho I am not sure about the highlight on the sweater. It kinda looks like a rip.

I can't make sense of his eyebrows.  What expression is he supposed to be making?  It's like his eyebrows are acting completely independent of each other.

Looks much nicer though.

What? You don't know what that expression is? It's so simple.

The hair is like one of those playdoh hair toys where it looks like you've just pushed playdoh out of a hole and it came out a perfect mold to the shape, heh :)
I like the new contrast... but I'm not sure about the highlights on the skin, you look like an oiled up wrestler now.
Other than that, nothing but improvements I think.

haha! That cracked me up!

I personally think the avatar looks great. You definetly have a good style there, Indigo. Only thing I think could be touched up on is the little highlight on the shirt like ptoing pointed out.

yep...it has a toy-like touch to it now

were you really going for what the rock is doing? you look more of confused in the avatar...which I think is better cause that "look at me im kewl" raised eyebrow is kinda overused

I was going more for the "skeptical" look.

about the highlight on the shirt - yeah, doesn't really work.  I'll take that out

thanks guys,

Yeah, that's what I thought, but it doesn't read.  Notice how Mr. Rock's brow forms a connected line, in the portrait it's just one eyebrow up, one down.  I think his right eye should also be open more.

With a character like this expressions need to exagerated slightly more than what you'd simply see in the mirror as it is a cartoon, otherwise you may as well try duplicate an exact image of yourself.

Edit - apparently im making the same expression in my avatar, lol who knew.
I've not got anything interesting to type here..

I think the problem with the expression isnt the eyebrows but the eyes... Mr Rock has the eye to our right closed more than the other one...

This is true. when I raise one eyebrow my other eye sort of closes a bit. Well, I can make it not, but it feels less natural.
