No Commodore 64 Old Men

on: December 19, 2007, 09:28:16 pm
My first attempt at doing any sort of C64 artwork.

Oldest <----> Newest

Critique/Suggestions would be nice. Also, feel free to inform me of any spots where I may have used more than two colors. I think I caught them all, but I'm not totally sure.

It looks good, but a little too blocky for my taste. However this seems like a stylistic choice as well as adhering to the techincal limitations.

Nicely done. I would say this is my favorite piece by far coming from you ;D As far as I can see, you've not missed any colors, so nice job!

I'm not going to pretend this is a small task either; certainly none of us here can claim to have accomplished it.  it's the realm of masters.  still, it's what we all have to try for.

Nice to see more people attempt C64 stuff :)

Fist off I marked some char errors where you have more than 3 colours.

I would suggest less style more structure.
Also some of the detail texture is just there for the hell of it but does not really add anything (esp the bit on the cheek on the left).
The chin / lowerjaw / neck area looks very ambivalent. It looks like we should either see a bit of the bottom of his jaw. Either that or you made his chin too small.

If I was you I would try to map out the main volumes at first before adding stuff purely for style, and even when you do that you should try to make it look more coherant. The outline of the hair and body does not really go with the face imo.

Don't give up tho, this is not easy, and what you have here is a good start. Keep on pushing!

I don't like how the skin now bleeds into the hair at top-right - something in the colours makes it hard to read. I think that the glaring contrast between light and dark is probably the piece's most striking feature, but it's lost a bit of that effect since the previous version.

Nive improvements elsewhere on the image, though, lips and jowls are much improved.

Yeah, I reckon that's a fair point about the hair. Thanks.

Error Report

This is coming along. Jaw is MUCH improved.

I think he needs broader shoulders, he looks like he is tiny and has a MASSIVE head.
He is a rather big guy so you could pretty much go for shoulderwidth being 3 heads in total.

Thanks a ton, Ptoing. I'm always amazed at how many blaring errors I can develop a blind spot for when I'm working on something.

A C64 executable of the picture

http://www.ptoing.net/noc64oldmen.prg

You can run this on the real thing if you have means of transfer or in an Emulator.
I suggest Vice http://viceteam.org with PAL emulation enabled.
