Fruit

on: December 15, 2007, 09:35:35 pm
Hello again.
Here's an apple:

And here's the reference:

24 colours which I took from the reference.
Comments and criticism, welcome as always.

Now this is art!! ;D Amazing work, best I've seen in awhile. The only problem IMO is that the dithering in the shadow makes it look a bit like a decorative rug, but maybe that's just me.

Love it, but some thing makes me feel like the shadow a a bit off, like the apple looks so real, but the shadow doesn't. It makes the shadow look really bad, where is would normally be okay.

also, i think the apple needs at least something that resembles an outline, like even medium/dark red if not, black.

Really good for 24 colors!

I really like it but it looks a bit rough. I think you could make it a lot smoother. Right now it looks kind of scribbled in places, which makes it look messy and not as smooth as apples really are. I get that it's one of those speckled apples, but I think some better placement and maybe some dithering, could go a long way. When I have more time, I'll try to make an edit to show what I'm talking about.

Sorry but no, this would totally ruin an otherwise realistic looking piece.

This is a good start, but as far as pixelart goes this is a sketch, it needs more pixelspecific treatment.
You can easily aa the borders to the white with what colours you go.

I made a quick edit to show you what I mean, this could be taken much further.

Also, you have a block of grey pixels to the right of your apple, colours which are not used and are prolly from the original one.
If you do not see them on your monitor it's time to calibrate.
There are no ugly colours, only ugly combinations of colours.

I was sitting there looking for that grey block for a long time in your edit, thinking... no, I can't need a calibration, it always seems fine! Only to finally find out the grey block was in his original picture.

Also, fully agree, this could really need some cleaning up, there really isn't a need for all those scribbles. Also, while the orange fits the reference well, it stands out a lot against the red. This needs to be addressed with dithering and perhaps some AAing, either way, it needs to blend smoothly, to eliminate the whole sketchy feel. I also think the shadow from the leaf stands out way too much against the apple, maybe use the darkest shade from the shading of the apple and blend it a little more with AA. I also think you should fix up the leaf some, those darkest greens really stand out a lot and look more like stray pixels. Just the whole thing needs to be cleaned up.

- Shadow revamped
- AA applied around the borders
- Dithered and sketchy lines removed
- Lessened use of bright orange
(I'm not sure how to redo the leaf's shadow but it does look very dark).

Yup, the grey block was part of the reference I shrunk down and put next to my piece, well spotted.
Thanks for the suggestions and nice comments :D.
And thanks for the edit.

Boonannies. 19 colours taken from reference again (http://www.stlucia.gov.lc/pr2000/images/bananas1.jpg).
This took a few hours but was relaxing and fun.
Ain't shadows a bitch though?

I'll be posting these in PJ if nobody has any qualms.

Really love the banana's, can't think of much to change... though the shadow is a little confusing, even if it is up to reference... it just looks like you missed the banana's shadow connecting.
