[WIP] Beards

on: December 03, 2007, 08:41:31 pm
Hello all,

I've just got in to pixelling, and these are my bestest pieces so far...

(He's supposed to be a blue giant built into a fortress)

(I'm probably gonna do his body as well, I nabbed the palette from the gameboy de-make mock-up thingy)

Current

any critique would be just dandy. I really wanna try and improve these 2 fellas  ;)

Very nice characters. The blue giant forthress is a nifty concept, I'd like to see some funtional structures, like ropes or whatever holding the sections together, ladders, railings and stuff.

For the giant I would say less black. It seems too dark. For santa, wow I really like this style. He looks great. I want to see the rest of him. Reminds me of santa from "The Nightmare Before Christmas". I think his cheeks shading is too much, not round enough. He currently has very high cheek bones for a Santa. Of course that's just my opinion.

cheers guys, here's a little work on santas body.

thedaemon: yeah his cheeks definetly need a little more work, I don't know whether to go rosy cheeks, or chiselled. I want him to look pretty badass

I've made a bit more progress with the shading. I don't know if i'm overdoing the dithering or not, it's hard not to with this palette

..well he's finally starting to look like the badass I envisioned. I'm thinking of giving him a grenade in his right hand and the pin in the other. I can see there's still something wrong with his shoulders though, I just can't put my thumb on it. Any draw overs/suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks  :D

Maybe a bit more dynamice pose? Looking really nice. The right breast looks deformed, Try following the contour of the body and not the arm for the right arm. (our left) Other than that and skinny ankles, I like.

Your dynamic pose is unfortunately completely out of balance and looks really wacky D:> Like a weird dance. Although the initial concept is nice.

The santa right now, though, does look frozen in motion, and the look on his face further emphasizes that. He's like 'what the hell is that!? ã __ ã'

.. And as such, it works.

Yeah I'm pretty pleased with the pose at the moment, it's just the little things bugging me.

thedaemon: Thanks I'll give his breasts a little going over tonight  :P. I think I get what you're saying. I'm gonna push out his right breast a bit so it covers the arm more. Also leg shape isn't finalised, I do kinda like his shape at the moment but it's all in the mix.

Jad: Yup, that's exactly the expression i'm trying to get. I'm glad you're seeing it that way  ;)

Haha, just noticed it is pretty bad out of balance. His shoulder need to be over to his right more. I was just suggesting a grenade throw pose and failed miserably. oh well.

a little more progress... I need to finish this by Christmas as it's for some comp on deviantart

I opted for a molotov cocktail as opposed to the grenade, it seemed more... festive

It's looking good so far, but there is one thing that is sticking out for me. His right leg (our left) seems very flat compared to the rest of the body. Maybe it'd really look like that under the light conditions, but it just looked a little strange to me. Besides that though, great job so far. Keep it up.

here's another update before I go to bed, cheers Generic I've tried to sort out that leg a bit. Please tell me if you think anything needs changing. I'm not sure about the lighter flame at the moment and the bottle definetly needs some work

hmm instead of smoke, the pipe seems to be spewing fire. That could be interesting, though.

Well here's the piece I handed in to the comp, if any a ya are interested. It was really rushed towards the end, hence the crappy writing, but i'm pretty pleased with how it turned out. It's my first real finished piece of pixelart.

I think it turned out pretty great. The leg looks a lot better now. Well good job, and good luck with the competition.
