[WIP] War game pieces C+C

on: November 26, 2007, 02:30:13 pm
Hi all, long time reader, first time poster.
I'm making a 2d side scrolling strategy game in the same vein as Armor Alley. The engine is mostly complete, now all I have left to do is the game art.
I've made some stuff as you can see so far, but I think it could be executed a bit better Would you folks mind giving me some feedback?
The  old tank isn't used anymore, I just keep it in there in case I want to edit it to become something else.

Originally the sprites were drawn on a black background, but my friend suggested we switch to something lighter so we wouldn't make sprites that turn out too dark or miss important details in lighting and shading. I think he was right, any opinions?

This looks interesting. Can you show assembled animation? Especialy explosion. ^__^ It should be great in movement.

Well, the blue tank needs more contrast, some parts in the tank looks odd, you added depth in some parts that I didn't needed it, a reference pic would be nice :) to compare yours. Well here is my try at it, reduced some details but kept the original palette:

Well, I messed around with the tank for a bit and changed the color choices so that it has more contrast. Then i changed the turret so it doesn't look as retarded with the dent in the middle and did the tracks. This was better than before and I proceeded to edit even more and go overboard, completely pimping it out as you can see in the last turret. Haha.

Also made this towed artillery piece:

What do you guys think?

Oh, here's that explosion you asked for, Sohei:

It looks pretty crappy for an explosion I'd say. I didn't pay too much attention to it when I was making it...
More or less hap-hazardly animated. Definitely could be a lot smoother, since the game runs pretty fast. I just don't know how to make a decent looking explosion without being all cartoony.

Cheers

New edit:

Soldier has been redone. I think it's a slight improvement.

Animation for walking:

(sorry for the black BG, these sprites will never be seen on pure black...)

Please critique.

Ugh, that background makes it terribly hard to see :(.
On the walking animation though, there should be more movement in it then just the legs.
Oh yes naked women are beautiful
But I like shrimps more haha ;)

Yeah. I forgot to say, there's no other movement than legs for now because I'm going to be interchanging torsos with different guns and etc.

edit:

Here's a better view of the walking/running cycle and some other new stuff thrown in

Even so, you should have the plain arms (and maybe the guns) swinging back and forth. It's really weird to have six frames of leg movement and no movement elsewhere.

Edit: oops, that sprite has a gun, too. I thought he was unarmed. Probably you don't need any arm swinging. Maybe some head bob?
