maybe that's just me, but i find that perspective quite hard to read ... maybe that's due to the black "top-of-wall" (i wouldn't expect the ceiling to be darker than the floor) or maybe it is really due to the 45-angle look (while my eyes would have preferred 22.5 typical isogrid) ...

well, the black is because it is "non-space" or like space where you can not go, it's technically INSIDE the wall, what you could do it break the straightness of the 45 degree lines up a bit. Little dents and such in the wall. I think that would help a bit.

I'm not a fan of the 45 degree iso either. The palette and the textures look really pleasing to my eye.. On the issue of the negative space, here's how it was dealt with in Ultima 7. http://websites.ntl.com/~adrian.r.powici/u7b2.jpg Simple but pimple.

I would make the void totally black.
