Started this edit some time ago and it doesn't really fit with the flat grass and such but i think maybe theres something you can learn from it still, mostly that having some kind of light source is always good. even if you totally break it like i did it still looks better than when its just flat and pillow shaded. I think you need to watch more refferences, I'm not telling you to go rip everything you see, but you have to decide for a style you want to use. When you just copied the earthbound grass-to-earth transition every other grass tile looked out of place. Also, I love Earthbound but using it as an example to copy isn't really that great since it's one of the ugliest rpgs there is.
regarding your intro scene you need to use some references, google image "sea sky" or "sea sky dramatic".

Again, back in a project! I am now trying to improve that character animation that I before posted here.

Here is the animation without any extra things:

And here is animation with sword and shield:

C+C and some suggestions are welcome.

your attack animations are a little stiff, your character needs a little more movement for the rest of his body

Youtube is full of dudes who can swing a sword:

I'm also assuming that this is a turn based RPG(Lufia, FF), because having your weapon on the sprite makes your range of attack weird for an action RPG(Zelda, Lagoon)

The game is coming to be action RPG, like Zelda and Secret of mana. So I should improve the range of weapon too. I've been thought that I am going to make own template but it is hard to find perfect image dimension. 32x32 Should be good but I think that it is easier to draw sprites which are 24x24 sort. And btw. 24x24 and smaller sprites are more cute than bigger ones

EDIT:

Here is a new forest guard sprite:

24*24 for an action rpg? Want to go even smaller, 8*8 maybe?
Basically, I think that you shouldn't decrease the size any more. And if you want your game to be an action rpg, you should decrease the frames of your attack animation, since it usually doesn't work well if your character needs 3 seconds to swing his/her sword ;)
