Face (WIP)

on: November 05, 2007, 04:15:12 am
Hey, my first post. I've never really had an attempt at pixel art so this is my first try. It's pretty amazing seeing so many people here are are just so great at it.

I'm stuck I don't know what the hell to do from here. I don't even know if I've gotten it right from the start.
Here's the original drawing.

Thanks for the compliment.
Yeah that's where I'm stuck. I had no idea were to start in terms of pixel shading.
But with a bit of perseverance I made an attempt.

I feel like I've gone in the wrong direction. What do you think?

I've made a color scheme that is a bit more realistic and less eggplanty. I'm happier with it but there's still more to work on, if I only knew in which places.

The outline looks really jagged. Is this because the ratio is too small? Or is there a way to make it look better?

anti alias is the key to 'de-jagging' do a search on this forum or check out google...

hahaha. The character is actually me. But yes, I am quite a character.
So yeah, I know about anti-aliasing and I'll have a go. I just remember hearing somewhere to not do any anti-aliasing on the outside of the lines. Is that correct or is that specific to sprites?

It just depends on whether the image is staying on a fixed background (or backgrounds with similar values) or on top of different objects (detailed backgrounds, other sprites, tiles etc, with various colors).
If it is the first one, AAing the outside part of the outlines will make it smooth and will work just fine.
If it is the later, unless you use alpha transparency there is no universal AA that works on everything, so you will be seeing random pixels over the things the AA doesn't work on.

Ok I had a go at AAing it. I probably didn't do it enough or in the right places.

Now since it's transparent the background I've been working it into is white, but if I were to put a different color background on it I would have to redo the AAing on the outside correct?

best would be do have "selout" instead of AAing. Selout helps your image look good on any background. I wouls fiz some part of the shaing first thoug. right now it looks like your character is made of clay also, might wanna think about new colors.
Image size doesn't matter! It's what you do with your pixels that counts!
