I know I shouldnt do this, but I wont comment the swords. I will only comment your post, smiker. What did you smoke exactly? True, the swords lack shading, but all you do is say "go shade em!!!"? Well, obviously he doesnt know how to really do that, so you should give him advice instead of posting a shitload of crap here.

I suggest you take a look at the tutorial topic in the general section, and read tsugomo's tutorials. And some of St0ven's to learn the basic shading.

I suggest you stay away from dithering till you get the shading correct. Dithering is an advanced pixel art technique, and it's hard to master. So wait with it a while :)

Handles tend to be shorter than the uh, part that you cut with.

bengoshia has a valid point, but then again a sword maker could potentially make a blade of a weapon shorter then the handle... But for the most part I think blades tend to be longer, regardless of the type of weapon.  Over all it looks...different.  Keep up the good work.

The hilt looks a bit big and doesn't really fit the rest if the weapon. Maybe you should get some references and design a weapon based on realistic weapons.

The black outline is a little obtrusive, you might want to change that.
Also, think aboot the shape of the handle before you try to dither it up.
it might be a one shot deal

The gold thing needs volume and intricacy - the butt of the hilt looks really weirdly attached. And most swords don't have a 45° angle point. Also, the blade still needs to be longer (or the hilt shorter).

Unless we are talking about a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nagamaki. However, I agree that this requires some work to get it looking decent. I would set the following targets for you:

-Make the tip of the sword a more interesting angle.
-Hilts of sword are traditionally made from metal. At the moment yours looks like wood, rather than wrappings or bindings. Make it more... wrapping-like.
-More shading to define the shapes of the blade.
-Gems are usually shiny and cut, so this should be reflected better in your pixelling.
-The elaborate shape of the hand-guard seems to be larcking in definition and shading. It also appears unlike metal. This issue is also found in the blade.

I would recommend looking at a reference, or doing a little research on how swords are made, decide which type of sword you wish to make, and then either edit or redo this piece to a higher degree of accuracy. Overall though, it's quite a good start to pixel art. Keep gunning onward!
