Tilesets

on: November 19, 2005, 06:27:47 pm
Can someone help me with tilesets? I dont need you to make them for me, i plan on doing that myself, it's just, i'm making myself an mmorpg and my tileartist(Demon, if anyone's seen him) Went M.I.A., so now i need to learn to do tilesets, basically, i need to learn:

Grass
Rocks
Water
Sand
Tiles(like, ceramic)
Wood
Trees
Brick

And those are the basics. Examples, and tutorials would be great, thanks for any help.

For starters, you'll probably want to go to here http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=222.0
This is a nice list of links to pixel art related topics that is a great starting point for the beginner. In there you'll be able to find plenty of links to pixel tutorials.

There are plenty of ways to create grass tiles, so it'd be a good idea to build up a collection of screenshots from games that you thought had interesting grass, bricks, etc.

Some good links to go for starters:
http://www.zoggles.co.uk/asp/tutorials.asp?tut=17&comments=yes
a backup of the original Tsugumo Pixel Art tutorial. The first chapters should be very relevant for what you're doing.
http://www.zoggles.co.uk/asp/tutorials.asp?show=index
grass and brick tutorials here
www.spriteart.com
Lots of good solid pixeal art techniques to pick up here at SA.com

And of course, it's always a good idea to do googles for real life examples of what you want to create.

People here tend to love Seiken Densetsu 3's(SNES) grass tiles, but they are fairly complicated to do right. Legend of Zelda:A link to the Past used a cartoony-style with a plasticy kind of look that would probably work well for you due to it's simplicity. The grass is basically flat-shaded green with little tuffs of grass every so often. Producing relevant sources for you would depend on the existing style that the artist set.
