Strange WIP

on: September 18, 2007, 01:00:16 am

His pants are a like reptilian creature head thing with a whole in the bottom. I dunno :T

I dunno whats going on with the little larva next to him, I'll probably scrap that alltogether

EDIT: By the way, the green lightsource is not part of the composition. Please no critiques on the larva either, I didn't really focus much time on that.

I mean besides the fact that its messy :P

No, in all seriousness, at this stage I guess you're really looking for anatomy crit--can't help you there.  But might I comment on the shading/highlighting: if you are going to have that big sun thing be the light source--which is what I'm assuming right now--the highlights on the little guy wouldn't be on the side of the head, but rather, coming from the back/top, you know?  But on the Gandhi-esque figure, I'd say you have the highlights down pat....perhaps a little highlight on the nose  ???  probably not actually  :-\.
I also gotta say, right now it's not really readable if the little guy's tongue is hanging out or if it's one of those things......I think they're piercing but I'm not exactly sure :S.  Anyways, you'll probably clear that up with time anyways.

Can't wait to see the finished product--pull through man!

The green hilights are pretty sweet.

I think maybe his near bicep is off, it looks weird.

Nothing at quite the right angle, but hope it'll show what I mean.

UPDATE: Did more work on the torso. I'd like some more critique on the arm closest to the viewer. Seems off to me.

The hand gesture on that hand is vague. It's the sort of position an artist puts a hand in when he's unsure what to do with it. It's not wrong wrong, but it certainly is underutilised as an emotional tool. The hands are really important.

Thank you.

Hand has a purpose now.
Hes no longer signaling for his check.
Got rid of the larva pigme thing altogether.
ALMOSTFUCKINGDONE. Anything else before I continue?

The way he's holding that staff makes it look like he's putting weight on it, leaning on it, as opposed to lifting it.  Perhaps it should extend to the ground?  Also, if you do extend it, you'll want to strengthen the part of the staff beside his elbow.  It'd snap pretty quickly under human weight.

I love the creature head as pants.

Like Helm said, the hands are very important, and since you seem to be going for a slightly cartoony look maybe it's a good idea to make the hands slightly bigger than they are now so you can put more emphasis on them and the grip on the wooden stick

Quick edit (totally over-exaggerated and out of proportion now), hope you don't mind and hope it's helpful:

That hand gesture looks like it's PULLING the belt, not resting on it. The hand is now utilized, but still underutilized. Take a few photos with your hand resting on your belt-line.

i see a bit of confusion here - Untill just now I thought you were critiquing the gesture of his right (our left) hand - and not the one on the belt.  Seems that josh, as well as others, thought that's what you were talking about as well.  Philjones was also speaking of the staff-hand when he mentioned "leaning on it".

EDIT:  I guess I was the only one confused   :-X

extra thing to learn from whitenoise'd edit, you probably need a second, duller radiogreen to aa and to portray surfaces that don't get so much exposure.

Well that was exhausting. Thats all who helped get me this far. Anything else look off?

By the way, Helm, I intended for him to be gripping his belt

God this is epically awesome, the only suggestion I can give is giving a little green lighting on the staff maybe?

Oh, I just had to compliment you on your smooth and dither-free shading style, it just looks great even on my lcd screen here.

And as it has already been mentioned, the left foot on the picture seems a bit bulky. Nothing much useful to add.
