[WIP] Main Character Walking Animation

on: July 01, 2020, 02:36:52 pm
Hi everyone, we are a group of friends trying to animate our first ever pixel art character. We animated the three main walk cycles (up, down and side), but we are complete novices to the world of animation. We'd like to have your impressions about it, suggestions and critiques are welcome.
Thanks in advance!

PS: Each walking cycle has two different versions, which one do you prefer the most?

Not bad!

it's nice to be able to zoom the image though...here:

also, not that it matters, but you don't have to attach the images to the post. you can host them elsewhere, and link them using "[img]". i use imgur.

I'm also a noob, but I think that for a 3-frame walk cycle those are fine. A bit too stiff, maybe, but I'm not sure if it's avoidable with that amount of animation frames. Perhaps if her head moved slightly or if the body twisted a bit on the side view..?

What jumps to the eye is that her costume is veeeery dark. So it's hard to see what's going on.

Thank you all for your help and kindness! We're taking notes, trying to improve ourself.

Thank you, next time we'll try to use the hosting method, we didn't know about that.

Thank you too, we are aware that it does look a little bit short as a walk cycle, but we are trying to keep it simple for now. And about the colors we'll change them soon and share with you all next time.

What do you think about each walk cycle version? We discussed a lot about which one is better, but we didn't come to a conclusion yet.

Okay, so a few more critiques:

In both of your top animations, the middle frame doesn't seem right, because the feet make a straight horizontal line, which makes it look like camera is pointed straight up on her, rather than in an angled top down view.
So maybe you should round the feet a bit there?

If you compare the top animations with the side ones at the bottom, it looks like we shouldn't be able to see the top of her chest, as the head would block it.

There could be some shadow on her chest and her shoulders to help separate the head a little.

Something like this, maybe:

Added in some anti-aliasing too more because I could than because I should... There are so many colors on your piece, so why not?

In the walking up animation there's something weird going on with her butt, because of the few highlighted pixels at the bottom. I'd make the top of the butt lighter.

As to which one I'd choose... Either? xD
Seriously, any one is fine. The one on the right looks more feminine. A little bit.

---

EDIT: It does kinda look like she's skating, though.

Hi, sorry for the long wait, but we have been busy recently. We really liked your suggestions regarding the feet and we're looking forward to further expand on that concept, we also acknowledged your impressions on colors. We'll make some changes to the sprite in the near future and we hope to share with you new updates as soon as possible. Thanks again for your patience and precious tips.
Kind regards
