Tarro

on: September 06, 2007, 02:41:11 pm
Hello all,
This time im asking for help on a collaboration project,
Line art by Metaru,
colors by me.
He asked me to color it, and he said I owed him a collab so I had to do this  :P

Thats him.
and now with the colors:

I did most of it myself, but I got some help on the blade of the axe from pj'ers.

and I feel pretty good about it now, exept for the handle of the axe.. It sucks.. and I really need some help with it..
can any1 make an example / show a tutorial/ explain how to make wood?

Any crits on other problems are welcome too!
greets,
Lollige

Heh, I like it! You don't need the dithering for the clothes there man. The dithering just makes the clothes look grainy. You can use folds instead like I did with the shirt.

I think it looks like you started with a silhouette, if I am wrong. You should start the piece by drawing an outline first and work your way how you want it. In my pixeling experience, you need foundation. Once you have the foundation down, you can pixel it to your taste. Use the outline as foundation at all times, it's a great friend to anyone :D.

Next, I've darkened the darkest shade you got there so it doesn't resemble the other shade. Don't actually make shades look similiar to each other, it will actually make it look too blurry.

You don't need a wood texture that pronounced. A plain brown handle is enough at that size, I think.

The way you've shaded it, with the highlights along the edges of the arms, for instance, makes it look flat. The pose suggests that he's bending forward, so you'll need to shade him accordingly.

Your color ramps are very plain right now. I moved the colors closer to green as they get darker and desaturated them.

He also needs longer arms and shins. I also gave him a bit more of a jaw so that it doesn't look as much as if his face is severed in the middle.

Why cut off the axe at the bottom? There's not much missing, so you might as well add the rest.

Hope that's helpful. :)

I am infatuated with your ability to do so much with few colors, Arachne. BUT

Your lightsource, it is wacky.
It'd have to be awkwardly close to the dude, because of the red boxes, they're very similar angles, but only one is lit.
And, the one that is lit implies the lightsource is higher then that... head-spike, which doesn't make since when you look at the uh... thing, can't rightly remember, it's like, the opposite to the shin. Anyways, that is light up at an angle which implies the lightsource is off to the right.

Erm, wait. How does this directly help the original poster... Huh.

Oops, you're right. :D And I think there should be some shadows cast by the arms and the handle of the axe on his left leg somewhere too.

Whoa! 2 great edits!!

Ill remove most of the dithering, and get back to the more basics, and fold some more :)

and about the second edit,

Its really awesome what you did!

Hair: Im going to give it some more contrast, but yours looks too 'messy' - I dont really dont know how to call it in English - to me

The green you have used looks great! and the shoes do so too!

The t-shirt shading is awesome, Im going to try something like that too,

thanks for showing me how to do the wood

Ill make the axe full, I agree that that looks better

Everything on in just looks awesome!!

You are right on the jaw, but now its not the same character any more.. Ill be thinking about it, and maybe discuss it with Metaru, the creator..

I really like the new color sheme you gave it!

Ill get back to the basics, and try to make it better!

Lollige

EDIT:

aarg this is soo hard.. 10 minutes of trying what you did (10 minutes isnt much, but I didnt try that much aswell) and it sucks..

That looks better. The shading can be difficult a lot of times, keep workin on them. You can add another darker shade to the pants to give it more depth. That's all I got.

Not really feeling those colors, I think you should really rethink them, Arachne's edit is worth studying, notice how she uses one color in a few different places.

Be bold and add some contrast.
The blue's for his hair are far too saturated, so much so that it's hard to define each shade. Tone it down a bit and/or up the contrast. Shadows usually have lower saturation.
His arms are really short. Arachne fixed this a little by shortening the extended shoulders.
Practice clothing folds, they'll really help this piece (as can be seen by Arachne's edit).
Gooooooood luck.  :y:  ^-^

But I like the new colors I gave the hair and the jacket..
ill start cleaning up the handle now.

is he made out of clay, and does he live in a magical land where gravity doesn't exist?  if so, anatomy and pose are passable.  If not, he needs real reworking for form and balance.
A mistake is a mistake.
The same mistake twice is a bad habit.
The same mistake three or more times is a motif.

Probably not
So I still have to work on it.
What do you actually mean, and how and where do I start?
