Poppin Portrait

on: August 20, 2007, 11:50:57 pm
Ah, well taking a break from This I doodled out a portrait of my mockup's main character and decided to pixel it.

I've had some issues with her right eye x_o. I hate 3/4 faces. I'm also not used of anime eyes but i thought they'd suit the style.

Any tips/suggestions?
If you spot any redundant colours, let me know.

((note: she's holding a pill haha))

The mouth and jawline really bother me. I understand she's supposed to be smirking, but it just looks strange to me that her mouth is facing straight at the viewer and it perfectly level when the rest of her is facing a different direction and her head is tilted. I think the mouth could follow the direction of the rest of her face more.

And I can't really tell what's wrong with the jawline to me. Maybe it's too shallow of an angle or could merge to the ear a bit smoother, I don't know.

I did a very quick edit

edit:                                       Yours:

What I fixed:

1: your eyes where misplaced one was very high the other normal

2:the pink dots were not quite in the right place either

3: the mouth was in a different perspective than the whole face (the mouth was at a straight on view)

There is still something wrong with her ear placement and her jaw that i didn't fix

Hope this helps.

I'll take another shot at the mouth. I'm not sure what to do about the jawline though haha

hm..haha..phlox her head is at an angle. You're not seeing it directly from the side. if you were why would you see her part (hair) ? Here's a shitty difference example, but hopefully it gets the idea across lol

Great hand you drew. I'd move the ear up little. Make the neck curving back out at the bottom back bit.

Hm, I think my edit is a bit clumsy since I'm not used to work with eyes that big. I moved the nose to make a bit more room for her right eye, which wraps around the edge of her face in a strange way. Same for the rose in that cheek. You wouldn't be able to see her right ear from that angle, and I moved the other ear up a bit. I also shrunk the head quite a bit. If you don't want to do that, you might want to move the eyes up and give her a longer nose to match the  shape of her head. I gave her a bit more of a chin, but I see you've taken it in the other direction. :)

haha the ear that should be hidden is there purely for aesthetic reasons on my part xD. I know it wouldnt actually be seen but I guess i just like it there haha. I've removed it and it doesnt look right to me that way either LOL. The head size I agree on to a point. Most of the size up above is due to simple hair volume rather than skull size, however her face is too tall.

thanks for the edit! a deffinite help, especially with her friggin right eye. I can never get that perspective to look right.

Anyways I've edited her jawline again so its not at such an angle, moved the ear some and fixed its perspective, and redrew those (as i now see) FUNKY fukny eyes lmao

ANIME PLASTIC SURGERY GO!!

D:!!!

What have I done? She looks like an anorexic wtf scary thing now (she looks better in 2x though)

Just, stuff I did: I fucked up her hand (I'm using a computer mouse which just fails me, and I did the edit in paint, which killed me D:)

I emphasized the whites in her eye (it'd be good for her general expression if you could see both of her eyebrows, though, anyway, the eyes felt too shadowed by the hair)

I widened the mouth quite a bit (gives expression and personality)

and I anime:ed the nose (and gave it one (!) nostril and i apparently also gave her a cold since she's now red around the nose D;)

I also heightened her head for no reason at all, I should have made it smaller :(

Changed the angle of her neck so that she'd look more natural in her pose

and stuff.

One thing to think about when pixelling, work rough. You've put a lot of finish in the picture (which I have effectiely destroyed), anti-aliasing and so. stuff like that is nice to put in early in the picture (the oooh, I'm making it nice looking, yay-feeling), but it's even better to save that for the last touch and in the beginning just be sure that all the shapes are the way you want them.

So what I'm saying is that if there are any revamps you want to make with this image, go all on out and don't be afraid to destroy something beautiful you've already created in favor to replace it with something either nicer, or something that will make the picture, as a whole, work better.

And that's like, it :D cheers and goodo rucky, habu funny.

(oh, and of course, I, aside from destroying her nose, put it in the middle of her face (or at least, more then before) since even though anime noses are generally offset from the middle line of the face, trying to structure the face usually helps the balance and so on)

ANIME PLASTIC SURGERY GO!!

D:!!!

Neck:
I think the more natural placement of the head/neck takes away from the piece as a whole.
Leaning back with her head tilted towards the pill makes her seem like she's almost evaluating it.
Yours seems a little too eager.

Nose:
Definitely cuter, and I think the placement is better, but there is no real reason to be changing the shape/style of it.

Head shape:
Much better.

hahaha PILL!! D:!!  that made me laugh. What do you normally use for pixelling? I have a tablet but i hate using it for pixel stuff, i always use a mouse o_o.

The nose you gave her is adorable LOL I want to pinch it. I like the one she has now though too haha xD it's meant to look bulbous and silly hehe. The mouth definitely needs to be widened though and I shall be doing that :). You're also deffinitely right about the working in rough thing..i just have a tendancy to go in and automatically a/a things as i am working rather than after im done. I don't even think about it x_x;

will edit w/ an update in a bit

EDIT://

moved the nose and widened her mouth some

--

haha i've also started making an edit for a diff type of pill

I like the longer hair but I wish I could see more of her other eye. Her eyes also look a bit like she's looking over the pill not at it.

I love the colors you're using. Can't wait to see the finished piece.  ;D

I can't really put my finger on it, but the face as a whole looked very disjointed. I think that it's the separation of the details; everything is so isolated from everything else and with such bold colors that they stand out violently, notably the cheeks (fade them a bit more?). Jad's edit is easily the best so far.

I do love the concept, however.

yeah Rave is right in that things kind of -stand out-, but i think that throuhgout this everyone has been trying to get me to make this look realistic in some way or another and i just wanted it to look cartoony haha ^^;. So the bright/bold cheeks etc are like that on purpose. I feel that changing them would detract even more from what i was going for to begin with LOL.

I'e uploaded a semi-final version to PJ :)
