New Background - Subway hall

on: November 10, 2005, 06:07:19 pm
Hey everyone,

so, I got fed up with the old background. and I decided I should try another indoor, before going outdoor.

so... here it is... in steps!

this is all the prespective work. hardly any color and manly defininf the space. I'm going to use spherical prespective, but I dont use it right now, i still find it confusing. I do "bend" shapes latter on. right now I dont wanna be distracted by that.

this is just adding the first set of colors and trying to see where I'm going to put the light sources.

getting rid of all the original black spaces. you can see I'm focusing on the right side of the image. I'll change that.

added reflections on the ground an floor lights. this balances a bit the eye but not the color. theres much more color interest on the right side than on the left.

so I added some sort of decoration or publicitie and the light signs.

its not finished of course. I still have alot to do to it!

tell me what you think.

take care,

Kazuya Mochu

Image size doesn't matter! It's what you do with your pixels that counts!

I LOVE the reflections on the floor and the lighting, can't wait to see the end of this. Good job so far...

Now I must do a perspective piece myself :3

WOW Kazuya!

This has gotta be the best thing I have seen from you, and dude does it rock. I couldn't stop a smile at looking at the level of the art even in the perspective sketch, and after looking at the newest step so far, with floor reflections and neon lights, I just stared. I don't know if you are going to make this as detailed as possible or sketchy, but I sure hope it will be really detailed. It seems no elements are missing, but I think the closest rightest ceiling flag/flap looks a little off. I understand that you make the perspective a little bent, like if it's watched through a lens, but I think the flap still looks a little wrong? Other than that, I see nothing wrong. Just remember to check the perspective and geometry before getting to far so you won't have anything you won't like. And as with Gil, It sure inspires me to do some perspective thing myself.

Lookin good, I like the reflective things, a nice touch.
inside the arches, the brick lines or whatever dont match up too well.
keep it up!

The purple is killing me, really; it bothers my eyes a lot ( almost feels like a distraction ). I would desaturate it. Also, I think you could cut off that part of the hallway to the right.

The whole thing is just so java, I love it. I've recently had a huge interest in backgrounds/landscapes lately; they are a lot of fun. I hope you finish this one. Beer to you.

Reminds me of a futuristic citadel, or something.

I agree with Darion on this, the purple is too distracting and the right side of the hallway really destroys the warm atmosphere it has. Especially that D line sign, the white completely killed it.

I could definitely have sex with those floors though. The bit of blue lighting goes really well with all the orange everywhere else and the reflections make it feel so modern and classy. Please finish it!

Disagree about the purple, with all those greens it needs some colour, and once you detail the banners up it will look even better. Very interesting to see how you put this together, are you working from a photo for reference or making it up as you go along?

I used a reference for tones. I have a tendency to make everything over saturated and cartoonie. so I fetched some image of a subway station. some fashy one, and blured it to pick my pallet. but not the arquitecture.

well, I kind of have to say that I like the banners hanging there. because I'll be adding alot of stuff. telefone boths, posters, publicity. some wet floor sighs maybe... so i'll have detail every where. I just putted them there for color balance.

so, thanks everyone for the comments. hope not to let you down.

Gunstar has a point, the purples do make the pallete richer...but looking at it again, they look a bit to lonely, I think they need to be better integrated with the image...u should make them fade off to the greenish tones as they go towards the background, but you  should also bring other warm elements, that way the purple wont be as harsh, but you'll have more warm colors elsewhere to balance the pallete.

Thank you for posting all those progress shots.

As a sort of beginning artist, it really helps me to see how someone as talented as yourself goes about doing such art.

Simply amazing :).

I too could see it in a fighting game xD. Imagine seeing the reflection of your character on the ground as you moved, and how smooth it would look with a fighter-styled camera. Would be pretty sick xD.

I often use Photoshop for pixeling as well. Just use a 1px pencil tool, easy as pie and with all the hotkeys it's much more efficent than paint, IMHO.

To Kazuya: Looks stunning so far! I can't wait to see this finished.

yeah the thing about photoshop is really the shortcuts! it makes you work a hole lot faster. and my dithering, it was made using a costume brush.

I made a patter like this
0  0  0

0  0  0

0  0  0

and set that as a brush tip, so now I paint groups of pixels like that. it's really helpfull.

most people will say that photoshop has far too many tools that dont make sence for pixeling. but thats if you'r counting on using photoshop only for pixeling. if so, I wouldn't advise you so. but if you wanna use it for other stuff, like cg painting, design and stuff like that, than it's the mother of all software :D

(this is starting to sound like a salesman speach :D)

take care,
