~* Comment my Character~!!! (Thanks)

on: July 15, 2007, 09:37:41 am
Hello, here's my first post here.
Recently I've just create my own character. He's called Leaf. and he's also a normal green leaf! But I made him in Adobe Illustrator which is I familiar with.

: Here

Then I think about turning him into pixel work, so I try it. and man, the result is quite terrible!  :(

Compare to my illustrator, I think the body in pixel work should be smaller and make the head bigger. Also I think about apply more shade and colour to pixel, but I have no idea how to make it.
So, any suggestion is appreciate. Thanks~ :D

i think you should make stronger leaf veins...and you should match that style...if you want it you'll need to remove outlines...anything  else...i like them...very expressive :)

Your sprites don't have that clean style like the vector does, try getting rid of the outline and giving it a richer green. The animations seem to be going at a rather fast speed, try to slow it down.

Ya, I think you need to stick to your roots with a character like this because everything it has going for it is done in stylistic choices. No outline, no shading, simplistic shapes. You got rid of all that in the sprite transition and it destroys the character almost.
This is how I did the transition, though some might disagree with my opinions, but I think you should just hold true to the character.
I didn't AA the veins, and you'll want to keep in mind that with this kind of smooth character, it'll need a lot of AA to keep it that way.
(sorry for the no transparency and sloppy shape of the face, I was rushing)

Hey, Thanks everyone~! That outline make my simple character too complicated.
I didn't ever notice that before, but it's true. At first I just think that good pixel art should be very detailed and have subtle shading, diffusing... method or something. Now I know that everything have exception, it's depend on what you want your pixel to be, right?

So, since I prefer clean and simple pixel style, I edit my character again, thanks Dusty for inspired.
Here: (It looks...quite terrible)

and then I think about the retro big pixel style like in NES game. So, I decided increse the size of pixel to make more retro look. Is it fit with my simple style? ???

Much better than your first attempt.  :y:
I definitely prefer this to the large pixel one. Some AA would help though.

AAing is smoothing out the transition between two colors. Usually when you have two colors next to each other that have a noticeable difference in shades, they appear pretty rough next to each other, like the veins in your character's leaf. You would smoothen those veins out with a mid-shade. Here's an edit I did, you can zoom in to see the changes I made.

AA=Antialiasing.

I noticed nobody pointed out what the actual word was, but they gave the right definition.
