c64 piece - Well

on: July 11, 2007, 07:38:01 pm
This is my first play with anything ye olden style (c64, etc). It was definitely a challenge for me, took me a while to get my head around the palette, as much as I did. Picked a reasonably easy thing to pixel, a well. I'm pretty pleased with how its turned out, however I offer it up for crits :)

Doesn't adhere to any restrictions, I violated them ridiculously because otherwise I would have given myself a headache  :hehe:

Reads really nicely at 1x. Any reference used?

Oh, and screw restrictions, if the piece benefits without them, it's all good.

Cheers. Aye, this is the ref;

Except I had the image printed out and stuck on my wall...which seems to have made the lighting look quite different from this pic! Might have another go at the shading...

LOVE the way you played with those bleak colors, it has a toy-ness about it not present in the original =)

Thanks  :). I tried playing with the lighting more, not decided yet on whether I made it better or worse...

That's beautiful. I love the colors you've used, but the AA is a bit inconsistent and makes some parts of it look blurry. Other than that, I think it's great for a first try. :) Will you be making more little pieces like this?

I think I prefer the first one - it feels more free. The second feels a little too thought or something. Like maybe you thought too hard about the structure in 3D space and put light and shadow in more generic positions...

I love them both though.

I love it.
I'm not a fan of the palette, so that's something, I guess.:P
"Baboy" is Filipino for pig.

Your Well looks great, you should pixel the rest of the parts from your reference too.
It's funny, I hate the c64 palette but I love the grittiness of the wide pixels. Either that or I'm just high on nostalgia.
