I think your AA is fine, but you forced a little bit in superior label division, it doesn't pass the idea, looks like he is with a tube under his nose. O_o

Its quite nice work. I still see some choppiness here and there (such as the very top of the right one, and the back of the neck on the same guy), and I had a go at trying to edit it, but I could achieve no positive results. Maybe I should do some AA practice too

Imho it's very hard to do things better with the buffer shades you decided one. If you have one more darker shade it gives you the ability to round some things much more:

about the right piece: I guess the problem if you want really clean AA on the shaded parts is again that you don't have enough buffer shades. a shaded area limits you to even fewer of your shades available for AAing so either you go for more shades, or get statisfied with a slightly dirty look ;)

A shade used as aa can be more than a pixel in length. If the angle is shallow then indulge in using more than just a pixel of buffer.

FULL THROTTLE! woop

I like both the images - clean well defined lines (in an illustrative sense) but the left guy's philtrum (the bit between your lip and nose) looks wrong and stylistically out of place (its too shaded).
