[WIP] [CC] Top-Down Zombie Cruise Ship Deck

on: April 15, 2020, 08:42:02 am
Hey all!

Here are some WIP props for a horror-themed cruise ship environment. I just started and will upload work bit by bit. I'd appreciate any and all critique. The project is inspired by the Resident Evil games, specifically RE: Gaiden. So "semi-realistic" is the desired pixel style. I feel I'm slowly getting that "realistic/textured" look with the props. The table and umbrellas are close to done, in my opinion.

I'm still tweaking the chairs but I like the side view a lot. The front view is proving to be difficult and can't even wrap my head around a back view.

Here's how they look in a mockup scene - the cruise ship deck. I'm adding transparent shadows underneath the props, so they look more grounded and real. I'm only doing this on some props and only where it makes sense. The plan is to experiment with lighting in a game engine. Thoughts? All comments, critiques and suggestions welcomed! Thanks!

I just wanted to say that I really like that table, it looks great.  :y:

Somehow the front facing chairs don't seem to follow the same perspective, but I can't quite put my finger on what you'd have to do.

Either way, keep it up!  ;D

Thanks for the like! Here's an update. I cleaned up the shading on the umbrella and changed the contrast. Right now, I'm not happy with the base underneath the table. It still needs some work.

Too much dithering/texture on the table, maybe? I think the umbrella looks good now. Any comments? I also started on a new prop, a trash can! The sliver of blue-green is walls of the ship reflected. That's the idea, anyway.

Started working on the floor texture! How does it look? I kind of like the square shading but the colors feel boring. Wood floor on a cruise ship has a uniform look but I know I can push the values somehow. Still working on the table too.

Experimenting with some chairs. Thoughts? The arm rests were hard to get right. I'm still not really happy with any of them.

Here's the reference.

Hey! Just wanted to say that I like your work so far.

There is something wrong for me with the changes on the table. Even though I'm happy that it's less noisy than the first version, now that it's darker we cannot see the stick of the umbrella as we saw it on the first version. And I think it affect a lot readability on this couple (table/umbrella), it's harder to imagine that it is plugged in a hole in the middle of the table. So maybe come back to lighter table color ?

For the blue chairs, I like them a lot, they feel really realistic to me! The two last ones on the right looks better to me in the shading.
