*sigh* Newbie here. Need comments.

on: November 03, 2005, 03:47:44 pm
Yes. I am a newbie. In my spare time, I have been learning pixel art. Hopefully, I've been learning well. Here is my first drawing thing.

I have no idea how to make it less flat. Please help?

It needs more depth - try using more than single-pixel lines to shade, and using intermediary shades to create the appearance of smooth curves/gradients. Dithering also works, though it's a little harder to make it look right.

Hmm. I've learnt a little bit about dithering, but all my shadings go wrong.

*Look! I'm an EDIT* Any other comments?

Your gameboy is unproportional.  The screen is scrunched up at the top while the large buttons sit in the middle.  IMO the buttons should be moved down possibly shrunken.  The screen enlarged vertically and horizontally and maybe make the gameboy thinner.  PS There was a select button right?

Also, if you want it to look like a Game Boy, Game Boys have speaker holes and another button next to the "Start" button. I don't have and have never had one myself, but that's what I remember about them.

Any particular reason why it is so big? Is this for fun, or is this going on a website, 'cause if it's just for fun, shrink it down quite a bit.

As he says, this is way too big...
When just starting out, it's much safer to start with smaller sprites... On a smaller scale, less looks like more.
Once you start getting into really large images, it takes massive amounts of patience and skill to achieve the same effect as can be achieve on smaller scales.
Here's a quick GBC I made for you to (hopefully) learn from.

As you can see, it fits inside yours' screen...

Right. It was going on a website, as a navational menu. Thank you for the advice. I will try to make it slightly smaller.
