The Best Game in the Universe

on: June 23, 2007, 11:15:41 am

Left one's Maddox, in the middle is the manly Beef Jerky and on the right there is the enemy: An emo. Kind of a mockup, I'll attempt to make a BG for it in a bit, anyway, I need some crits on the overall style and if it's well, manly enough.

I did a quick edit of your maddox sprite, it looks alright already, but still has untapped potential, the emo sprite I don't like so much.. doesn't really capture their look or depict them as an enemy very well... I'd recommend having him lean forward, maybe parody the classic zombie posture actually..

anyways, back to my edit:

As you can see, I grabbed your lines, cleaned them up a little bit - your sprite had too many details that ended up just as noise, re-did the shading in a more Maddox-esque lightsource - shunning the very sun, then just a simple hueshift

keep it up :)

edit-
I should've added a few more colours.. oh well :P

I have no idea how you can add a pretty obvious yellow and a pretty dark purple as skin tones, I will try though, great edit on the lines. I have a quick question, why did you turn him red and then give him a very bright lighting and then drastically change it darker?

I just brushed over the whole thing with 50% red so he had some colour I could work with, then a hue shift for each shade, then I overlayed the greyscale version with the layer set to "darken"

just experimenting with laziness+photoshop

The only thing between Maddox and his Beef Jerky is this emo/goth, bear coming next. Mockup is still a wip, crits would be appreciated.

that does look pretty good, though I think that the topless guy needs some work. some highlights on the chest and belly would help make him pop out more. also some more tile variation wouldn't hurt! good none the less

I did an Edit to show some aspects:

a block-coloured one frame gif? you sure you uploaded the right image?

and yeah, I do have some crits.
First I just wanna clarify I don't mean that you should just completely follow the edit I made, you're free to go in any direction you want.
but it seems you've bee slowly adding 'dots' of detail allover Maddox's sprite, it doesn't really make any sense given the lightsource, unless he's ridiculously sweaty or covered in gliter.
Sweaty, sure I can understand, but glittery?
glittery, his next article would be about you :P

I think given the detail you're adding, you might want to change the lightsource so it fits in better, also with the extreme sun on back lightsource, sprite flipping would be pretty bad..
and I also think you should keep him at the same angle for his walk cycle, it's better that way for many reasons, all animations read a lot better when the limbs aren't immediately behind each other, and making him change direction usually doesn't even need a tween frame

 Oh, woops, I had the rest of the body on a seperate layer and forgot to enable it, doesn't matter now, not gonna use that one.

I attempted to change the lighting on it, it looks odd though.
