C64-ish smileys

on: June 21, 2007, 03:46:33 pm
I'm sure these break a buncha rules (#colors and width). I just wanted to explore that (C64) palette a bit. Being forced to ramp and hueshift using the available choices is interesting.

Welcome to what saved my interest in pixel art a few years ago.

All these read wonderfully at 1x! Good job.

Haha, thanks. I can't say I'm sold on that palette though.

Yeah, I meant for them to be read at 1x. It's interesting how med-res (That's what DPIV called it anyways) kinda works at 1x while still having a 2x feeling. I use the 2x mouse gesture compulsorily on most pixel graphics, but not so often on med-res.

Edit: I'm spreading misinformation due to senility. Med-Res should be "Interlaced". Med-Res was tall pixels indeed.

I have an extension in firefox in which I right-click and roll the mouse roller to zoom in on any pixel graphics I find on the 'net (yes I don't use the pixelation script) and I instinctively zoomed in once when I opened this thread and was about to write scathing critique about vagueness, but then I zoomed back out and everything reads great at 1x! That's a strange effect.

Yeah, I can't say they're very appealing to look at in 2x.

I got a mouse for my laptop which has a 2x zoom button on the side of the mouse. It opens a floating window. It's a bit of a resource hog, but it works great when 2x-ing the images distort the layout or make them partly disappear in frames.

These look pretty nice, like Helm said they read well. The only one that doesn't read so great, at least for me, is the last one.

OT: Helm, where did you get that extension?

med-res (That's what DPIV called it anyways)
med-res on the amiga is a screen mode with "tall" pixels instead of "wide" pixels like on the c64..

Anyway, these smileys are fantastic.. I have no troubles reading them whatsoever.

All this "best viewed at 1x, 2x, whatever-x" talk is a bit ambiguous though, it depends on your monitor size and what resolution you're running on it, on my 22" monitor at home running 2048x1536.. all pixel art read alot better zoomed once or thrice.

I usually consider 22 inches - 1028x to be the '1x size' and yes, it's vague.

The firefox extension is called 'Image Zoom'.

oops sorry, I got that wrong. It's called interlaced of course. I actually went and checked in winUAE twice when typing the post, to make sure it was called Interlaced, then I got confused when typing and screwed it up anyways! :(((

I use a 17 CRT at 1152x or something.

The Mouse Gesture  (ff extension / add-on) for 200% is diagonally down right, and the opposite way for 50%.

The advantage with the zoom on my laptop mouse is that it just zooms anything under the mouse, like Java Emulator windows or whatever.

.. I assume you mean 1024, and I guess that makes 2048x1536 on a 22" screen screen half-x? :P
