Retro Platformer Mockup

on: June 19, 2007, 07:12:13 pm
Yet another mockup from Shiny ;D kekeke
I'm going for a retro look this time, so i've limited myself to 8 colors that have R/G/Bs of 0, 127, or 255.

As always, C&C is welcome ;D

[NEWEST]

Changes:
  • new main character ;D the old one looked a bit... janitor-ish
  • new HUD
  • scaled up 2x for easier viewing
  • a few new misc. sprites and tiles
  • a new mockup that's more typical of a game scene

[OLD]

nice one reminds me of megaman on NES, but the colors are kind of dull, the attack with a flail need one more frame.
my way of the pixel? -> minimum effort, maximum quality 0_0

All is good then. I intended for it to look similar to an NES game :D

really? I thought they were a bit blinding myself ._. the foreground stuff anyways...
The background is a little dull, but i've yet to decide on a good color that doesn't take away from the foreground scene D:

Where would you suggest adding this frame at?
I want the animation to be easily readable, but using few frames to keep that 'retro feel' ;D.

i'm wondering why your tiles are so bright and exciting and your character fade to nothing.  really should be the other way around
A mistake is a mistake.
The same mistake twice is a bad habit.
The same mistake three or more times is a motif.

I like the janitor. What's this new guy supposed to be, some kind of Chinese demigod?

If I was gonna add a frame to the flail (and I think you should) it would be 1 last frame after the fully out stretched frame, retracting the "hook"(?) all the way back to the handle.

Personally I find the blues on the background tiles a bit garish; too much contrast. Overall, though, I like what you're doing. It looks like it could been a Lynx game, but it's better looking than most Lynx games.

Seriously, though, the janitor rules.

...They say Mario's a plumber, you know. Just saying.

I tweaked the colours of the mockup a bit (didn't touch the pixels). Still using your restrictions of 8 colors and only using 00, 7f and ff.

(Perhaps some occasional variation in the ground tile colours would be nice, too.)

Well in the olden days.. we had limited tile pattern storage and...
Yeah... i'm just being lazy again ._. If I can keep the tile count low enough i'll consider it ;D

I tried doing this a multitude of times, but each time I didn't like the result so I never got around to doing it D:

Using these palette restrictions I couldn't find more suitable colors, so this one just stuck.

Here's two edits I made...
I tried to give more focus on the sprites by using a dark background (in this case black), just like most old games did ;D
I also removed the small amount of AA I used 'cause it looked a bit strange considering everything else wasn't AA'd.

I replaced purple with red because my palette really needed it.

I made the character nice 'n noticeable ;D try losing him now !
I'm a little worried about the cat sprite though. It's a bit dark. Mayby I should make the clothes green again...
(only 7 colors in this one :O)

And now the attack animation, with an added buffer frame.
I'm liking it ;O

@trick
Those bright mountains are really distracting XD
I like the yellow on the sprites; it really makes them stand out.
