Need help with leg anatomy

on: February 02, 2020, 12:44:03 am
So I've been working on this character for ages now and what displeases me the most is how the legs do not match the torso, especially the slightly chubby/fat body type. I'm looking for tips on how to improve and keep the proportion of the legs in pace with the torso so that I could start shading it. Suggestions are highly welcome here.

On second thought, it looks fine to me so I started shading nevertheless. Feedback on anatomy is still appreciated.

Updates:
-Improved the shape of the butt and thigh
-Added minimal shading to highlight the knee and belt buckle
-Gave him an appropriate, formal shoe to match with this particular outfit

Yeah, the shape is OK, but I'm not convinced by the lighting on the arm or legs.

Where is your light source?

The light source is in the top right corner. I don't see what's wrong?

the only real issue i'm having with the character is that hes leaning back too much,

in most normal/ idle positions the shoulders should kindof line up with the feet, so i would shift the upper body forward a pixel or two

Hmm, you have a point there, Mathcong. But I intended to make him have a relaxed, both hands on hips/hands in pockets kind of pose, as in the idle state. So, I think it is reasonable for him to lean back. I know I might have been exaggerating that, so I tried to minimize it nevertheless.

I see you've fixed up the lower arm's lighting. That's good.

If the light is coming from the top right, you might want the top of the knee to be lit, rather than the bottom. Also, the light will be parallel to the lower part of the leg, or maybe glancing off it at a steep angle. It might be in shadow, or at least a lighter shade than the upper leg's right side. Just below the knee you may want a touch of darker shadow still, as there will definitely be a little bit of trouser that's shielded from the light.

The rolled-up sleeve on the shirt sticks out a bit as well. If you shaded the upper part of the arm like you did the lower, you could also add some shading to the roll-up while keeping it looking brighter than the shirt.

Thanks for the reply, Chonkypixel. I see what you're thinking but I'm trying not to fit in a lot of detail into it. I'm actually rather impressed at the amount of detail I managed to add in such a small canvas limit yet I added detail to the upper arm, sleeve, the knee and now it seems to me, the face is too simple. Any suggestions?

My first thought would be that you probably need at least one darker flesh tone in there, and maybe darker hair. Then you can do things like add hair shading and deeper shadows around the neck and back of the head.

This is already looking loads better IMO. :)

It's supposed to be somewhat of a buzzcut, or a slightly noticeable male baldness pattern but the thought of cramping in too much detail seems daunting to me, if not unnecessary, so I think I'll pass. If you have any last tips on you, feel free to drop by. Otherwise, thank you both for the help.
