[WIP] Little Sprite

on: June 09, 2007, 12:01:56 pm
I'm still new to pixel art, though I've posted a few things here for help before (not that I got much :()

Here's my latest attempt:

I'm looking to perfect this, then give it a 3 frame walking animation and 2 directions (left and right).

So, what advice would you give me? Is the palette okay? Should it be bigger / more detailed?

Anything would be good, thanks.

Hey man;

I took the liberty to make an edit to show you some things you might want to try.

Basically i did some touch ups to the lineart, and try to define the areas, trying to keep the cartoony style thing you had going on.
I changed the colours defining more the areas, making some of them less saturated, others more, and overall, trying to make agood pallette usage. since right now it was around 18 i guess, and the edit has something like 11 or so, wich can be optimized too if someone wanted to be real anal about it.

Ummm, probably its not the direction you wanted to take, or maybe it was, but study the edit and reuse some of the things you find useful to yours.

Keep at it, its a fun little char!

That's a nice edit. I'm going to be anal about it however ;)

When doing outlines, it can be 'allowed' to chop 'em off at the tip of weapon muzzles. An outline there can put a lid on the muzzle so to speak... or I guess you could employ a more mid tone intense outline there (like red) if it's a plasma weapon or something (to suggest glow).

The outline at the bottom of the feet can also be omitted sometimes, because the feet squeeze against the ground, just like boobs squeeze together and the cleavage line becomes less pronounced.

As for the palette, you can go a bit gray-magenta in the shadow and increase the saturation in the lit area a bit. I did this with the hair colors. Naturally it depends much on the background colors and ambiance here...

You can try out the character against multiple BG colors to get a feeling of what values/colors works.

A fat margin around the sprite will affect your perception of it as well, as BGs tend to shine, like looking at an object against the sky.

There, I took the palette (and a large chunk of inspiration) from the head... Yeah, I copied it, sorry

Messed around with the character a bit, too. Now it's a knight :)

Edit: Animated it

Reversing the shading on the legs to make that one walk frame...it doesn't work.
Also, it looks like he's wearing a hat.
Also, in the animation, you've got a stray white pixel by the far hand.
