Dungeon Scene

on: January 28, 2020, 04:39:36 am
Hey everybody, this is my first post here. I just finished this scene and I was hoping for some feedback on how to improve it. Thanks!

I really like this! Great work!

The main improvements I would suggest are basically areas that it looks like you haven't got round to polishing yet. Like:

 - The door-handle could have some shape, texture and shading.
 - You've forgotten to add some highlights to some of the brick cracks near the top of the image
 - The perspective bricks on the side of the door arch are too regular and need a touch of roughing up.
 - The spider's web in the bottom-right of the doorway could do with some shading.

Stuff like that.

As an overall style point, some of the gaps between rocks in the lower part of the image look a bit like they're painted on, rather than representing slits, holes and cracks. A quick way to fix that is to use two colours. A highlight colour where the light catches the crack on one side, and a dark colour on the other side to represent the shadow inside the crack or slit. Then (if the crack hits a visible side of the rock) disrupt the edge of the rock to further sell the 3D effect.

You're naturally doing this with the bricks, you just seem to have forgotten to do it for some of the rocks.

The big six-sided rock just right of centre looks dangerously close to being pillow-shaded IMO, and that kind of shading doesn't really match the rest of the image. I think it would benefit more from a line of shadow across the top (where the step would occlude the light) and less shadow around the other edges. Some other rocks need shade from the step too.

One final thing. There's an odd visual effect where the big web hits the side of the door arch. It almost lines up with the brick lines and my brain reads it as the web continuing round the edge of the door arch. Also, the web looks like it's stuck to the inside of the door arch on the left side and the outside of the arch on the top side. This gives a bit of an Escher-like twist to things. Sticking it to the outside all the way round would probably give things a bit more depth and avoid that odd brick visual effect above.

But really, this is nit-picking. :)

It's pretty good but the torch fire and skull could be improved, maybe this is good reference

Tiny fire:
