Smile 2007 - Part 1

on: May 21, 2007, 03:49:43 pm
Our custom smileys own. And while we love them, it's about time for a renewal.
Ever wanted to have them your way? Now it might be your chance!

For the first part of this activity, we simply need a smiley template for being able nail all the other smileys afterwards (which are about 41 if memory serves me well). So, long story short, you will have 2 weeks to come up with smiley designs you would like to see used on Pixelation. Then, we will pick our favourite and carry on with the second part.

Rules:
  • All the submissions must be a replacement for :)
  • Your design should be around 20x20 pixels.
  • Multiple submissions are more than welcome.
  • All designs must be your original work, completely.

Due date for this part of the activity is June 4th.
So start pixelling while it lasts, and good luck!

Disclaimer: By submitting a design, you are agreeing and allowing Pixelation to use it as we might see appropiate. While we won't use the submissions for economical purposes (e.g. sell it), you shouldn't expect to be given credit whenever your smiley is used.

too big i would say, you have to think about that smileys generate gaps in the vertical textflow which can get annoying if they are too huge. I for my part would like 16x16 smileys best.
There are no ugly colours, only ugly combinations of colours.

and of course, some self-lovin'(has nothing to do with the challenge, to be honest...)

...Well, basically, none of these are legal, in terms of the rules, and past posts. The top smileys are actually about 25x25, which is too big, I believe. But there are still a couple days left, so I'm sure you guys will pull out some out of the "BOX" creations, by then.

Heh, funny you do that with squared faces.
At some point I was considering to do an activity like that early this month, but lack of time killed it, heh.
Practically we would be pixelling "pixels" with faces using the board's colors (or similar) and then make different compositions with them.

I really like these, but I have to wonder what's wrong with the old smilies?

There is nothing wrong with the old smileys, just trying to get more smiley sets.
And yeah, I believe they will end up being selectable so you can pick whichever you like (as long as the forum has an option like that).

No, they don't suck. In fact, these are my favorite, out of the whole set so far.(The yellow triangle's top/flat end could be extended a bit more, though. His head looks like it ended abruptly, as opposed to the purple smiley...) I mean come on....F***ING TRIANGLES, PEOPLE! If that's not brilliant, then I don't know what is. Thanks, BOB

I say they suck because they're detailed and hard to read at 1x. Triangles are hard to detail, what, having less area than both squares and circles and all. I'll give the 3-sided sucka's one mo' chance...

WIN

Edit: This one makes me happy.

Edit Edit:
Top row = Bold outlines.
Bottom row = No outlines (for fitting together ala Rydin's, of course.)
Leftmost = Low Color

My favs so far have to be Lawrence's set and the upper left smiley from Xion's latest set. Reminds me of NGPC art.

A mistake is a mistake.
The same mistake twice is a bad habit.
The same mistake three or more times is a motif.

Eck: You do realize that the first part of this competition is only to come up with the template for the smilies. So other people can do the smilies themselves later. (hence this only being part 1).

Quote
For the first part of this activity, we simply need a smiley template for being able nail all the other smilies afterwards (which are about 41 if memory serves me well). So, long story short, you will have 2 weeks to come up with smiley designs you would like to see used on Pixelation. Then, we will pick our favorite and carry on with the second part.

So far my vote goes to Lawrence for those charmingly constructed smilies.

I got my idea from Xions bottom left, the low color.. i started these at school with that in mind, and my friends just kept telling me to do more and more of them, so :D

Anyone making a smiley, keep in mind, they need to be really readable at 1x zoom. A lot posted here simply are not, broken linework and subtle lightness jumps that don't register at 1x.

Seeing all these pixel-shaped smiley, I think one thing to consider would be having different colors, depending on the smiley's mood. That would make them even more pixely in a way, though it might create visually messy posts. Or maybe using that orange-ish color from the forum's IM icons instead of the egg yolk yellow.

That may be because you uploaded it from a bmp? Photobucket turns bmp images into jpg's. I suggest you make it a PNG for hosting :)

I do think this is a good idea, then we could have a challenge where you'd have to pixel in smileys in a post. This would really make people feel like MSpaint is super-advanced right after.

roygbp = 6*3 + b + gr + w = 21 smileys. That's 3 shades of Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple each, plus black, grey, and white. Should be enough for some smileyart, methinks. And most certainly not unfathomable. Maybe even add some brown in there. Have some smileys reppin' the C-sikky-fo', too.

Actually they are smaller than the current ones (19x19 pixels against the current 20x20)
But being squared makes them look bigger.

I strongly agree, either of these two. They're very clean, and have enough space to portray more subtle emotions, as well as contain bigger animations.
(The animation on monsoon's here is virtually undetectable at 1x zoom though.)

I like the block idea. Tried something with a simple look and a bit of AA. No transparency, but that shouldn't be much of a problem here. There are only the single corner pixels that could be, and a darker grey than the forum posts backgrounds works just as well, I think.

Oh, and they're 16x16 with about 6 colors each.

I'm more interested in the colors he's using to portray the emotion, rather than the faces themselves. Great job Fak, you gotz my vote until further notice, Beetch...
Thanks for the kind words B.O.B., InvaderLupus, Helm.  I used MS Paint colors again...sssshhhhh.... :-X

And, I don't know, I kind of like Dusty's mixed resolution thing.  His smiley is very cute.

I like Perciv@l's, but I think the larger versions work better, with outlines.  Something seems very evil about all of them, though, like they have dead eyes.

personally, I'm not so sold on the square smilies, I guess it comes down to they don't personify as well as classic circle smilies.
I know its a minor difference, but the square shape registers before the expression for me.

And I don't really have any smilies made I'd prefer over the ones we currently have, well I do have a set I use in some forums with really bad smilies, I mainly just use these ones though:
Quote
(quoted so the AA doesn't look so bad)
might give someone some inspiration or ideas... and at the moment my favourites would be the ones snake and faceless made

At the moment  I like Percivals the most, even though my opinion doesn't really count due to how new I am to the forum. It's  just the simplicity.

Well, now that Monday is over (or almost over) globally, I declare this part of the activity finished.
Soon I will make another thread with the voting and the instructions for it, so yeah, thanks for participating and all.
