:'( Dude, that is wonderful for your first try in pixel art, welcome to the boards!

Have you ever gotten experience in any other mediums of art, as it seems quite like you have from the details and way you shaded it. But that's beside the point. This was quite a good piece of your first try ( better than anything I came up with at least ) there's just two things that really need to be addressed.

1. Light Source:

  • You don't really have any direct or general light source, but rather seemingly to have 3 maybe 4. If the light were shining directly from the front, there would be shadows around the arms where you put the most highlight.

2. Pillowy Appearance:
  • Well, the shading takes on a somewhat pillowy shading appearance or so. Could be just me but I'm not really an expert on shading, just wanted to point that out.

Change the lightsource like madartistan said, then maybe try some dithering, and try to remove the black lines maybe  :)

Thanks for coments. Well, I guess lightsource problem comes from the reference picture, it's my own drawing that I did recently.... You can see it here

I'll try to fix that problem.

although in your larger drawing the light is very "epic"-ish and so-forth, it doesn't really look like that in the pixel, I'd suggest maybe a more balanced color ramp, dithering (as said earlier), and some clarity on the lines in some parts, If I get the time tomorrow I"ll try to make an edit, but in general, it feels like it fades to black too quickly

First off, this is really not a bad start for a first attempt at pixel art but it appears you already have some CG experience which helps.

A big thing with this piece is that in pixel art, color choices are a little more important. The colors you use for your drawing may not work out very well value for value in pixel art. You want your colors to pop as you have less screen real estate to work with.

Another thing to look into is some hard edges and less blocking out between colors with in between colors. You also used glowing edges which added a bit of a nice effect in the drawing but did not translate that into pixel art. Anyhow I made an edit to point out a few things. So far it just addresses the top left corner of the picture (shoulder-elbow and head).

hey

Well here is my attempt at an edit, mainly edited the left side (the characters right side).
, and <- mirror

I did find the anatomy a bit odd, but I tried to correct a bit. I redone alot of the lighting/shading and such, but I didn't really follow your original concept :\. Anyhows I hope this helps in some way.

Good work.

The biggest problem is that it's overdithered, he looks like he is made from canvas almost. Also I do not get what's going on in his face, what with the strange nose and such.

There is no nose there ... the yellow thing is his mouth :)

I guess I got carried away with dithering, this things happen when you learn something new - you want to use it everywhere...

To me that yellow thing read like the underside or tip of his nose. I am pretty sure that I am not the only one. Readability is one of the most important things in pixelart.

Actually it’s his teeth. And to be honest I don’t know how to fix it. Any suggestions?

Look again at yosh's edit, and his control of outlines. In pixelart, you can't define every shape with a 1 pixel outline, all with the same color, because you just don't have the room. Careful usage of outline colors, or complete removal of these, help increase readability and amount of detail.

Great reference. In case you come back to this:

You should just try to follow your reference more for the face. Don't introduce new colors, kinda hint at details.

I don't think the outline you have (reflected light) looks good. Maybe if you make it brighter in some regions than others it would
work better. Or get rid of it.

Make skin look more like skin by introducing flaws like moles.

Good progress I see ))
But with his teeth. Ptoing is right - it's not light understand... look as strange nose. Try remove strong line on chin to mouth and face is obtain a less fractional - something like on sharprm but more less this line on face.

sharprm: Funny hair  ;D

Since I don't like to create many threads, this one will be my dump :)

I read some tutorial about basic shapes in iso pixel art and decided to draw some cubes and stuff. And I guess I got carried away a little ……. So here’s the result.

nice... it's Ultra Magnus! or perhaps not :) Optimus Prime tis his name
I like the coloring, but I also don't like it  :D
Perhaps you could add some hint that he's made out of metal?

Pfft! It could be the toy version!!! :P
No real crits on optimus unless you do want to make him look more real and less like a toy. Looks good. :)

Get rid of the white lines. They're not needed. If you're worried about needing an edge defined then there isn't a big enough difference between your base color and your shading.
Use a darker red and a darker blue, and then add a "shine" to the glass & metal.

Here's an example of some old work of mine that I did to make a window look like glass:

It's not perfect, but I think you get the idea.

I was going to show you an example of a metallic object I made around the same time as that window, but sadly I was a fool back then and most of my art was saved as .jpg files.
oh well

A little update ... Well...Tried to do what you told me about colors end white edges. Think It's fine now ... But with this shine on metal, I got stuck.... Just don know how to do it ... so If you or enyone else could do a litle edit, maybee on his shoulder,
and show me how to do it ... well that would be great.

Well, you've certainly improved in the time you posted the last thing and this. It looks really nice. You have a little bit of banding with the grey around the black markings (diagonal lines?) closest to the red.

There is nothing much I can really say other than its good.
